Below is a response to an email I sent Oppo. As always Oppo responds very quickly to emails with questions about their players . Bill We're currently testing a brand-new BDP-10x firmware that will allow a sequence of keypresses to change inputs, such as "INPUT" then "1" to go to the first input, or "INPUT" then "2" to go to the second input or so on. It may be necessary to add a slight delay (when programming your Harmony) between keypresses, but we're currently looking when and whether that would be necessary or not.
So yeah, there won't be discrete codes, but hopefully we will implement the possibility of using a sequence as indicated.
Best regards,
OPPO Digital Inc.I love it. Work arounds are fine by me. Beats setting up the RS232.

Thought I'd start here instead of AVS, any ideas why I don't have the option to play an .m3u playlist (created in foobar2k) on a USB drive directly connected to the 103? I can play other playlists on the network via the 103, but don't see playlists in the folder view of the connected USB drive. Thanks

Just bought the 103! ;D This will be my first OPPO. Well, actually I'm buying it for my folks as a Christmas gift, but I can play with it until then. You know, just to make sure it works properly. They're gonna be ecstatic to have Blu-ray capability and a top-of-the-line player. Their current H/K DVD player (which I also bought for them 4+ years ago) is nice, but it doesn't do BD. As mentioned in another post, I'll be taking the H/K player and integrating into my own setup for its SACD/DVD-A capabilities. Been following the OPPO threads here and I'm pretty excited to finally purchase one. I'm planning to set it up for them using both HDMI outputs: one to the HDTV and one to the AVR. I can't wait to bring over my collection of BD movies for them to watch now. Thanks to everyone for the feedback on the new units.

Yep, that's going to go nicely with my XSP-1 for Xmas.
Or XMC-1 for that matter down the road.

New firmware adds the direct input selection. Input followed by the number of the input works. Just finished modifying tje harmony. I can live with this.

Need some advice here on the BDP-93 vs BDP-103. None of the feature upgrades on the 103 interest me except for the HDMI ins and the improved analog section. I have two options:
1) Sell the UMC-1 that I won at Emofest (still unopened in the box) and use the $ towards the 103. Or,
2) See if someone wants to trade their 93 even for the UMC-1
I watch only about 2-3 hours of TV a month. Movies: Maybe 5-6 a year. Mostly music listening, and live concerts on Blu ray. My 52" Flat Screen is mostly used as my computer monitor. My daughter uses the TV the most learning piano and guitar from YouTube, and some other online sources. As you know the video quality on YouTube is pretty bad. Many of the YouTube sources are as low as 240p with some only as high as 360p, and 480p. The 480p videos are way fewer. I want better much better clarity, but starting with a resolution of only 240p, or 360p is that too low of a starting resolution for the 103 to do anything significant with?
So to re-cap here I am only interested in know how far upwards the 103 will upscale? I don't want to hear theory. I would like to hear from you that have actually used the 103 to upscale video and what your opinions are. If there is only a slight improvement, or if there is a limitation to upscaling from the low resolution that YouTube has say, I may come out ahead dollar wise in trading the new UMC-1 for a good used condition BDP-93.
What say ye gentlemen?

Above, when I said upscale video, I am referring ONLY to upscaling video from a computer/online source.

I would sell the UMC-1 and put that money towards the 103. I feel the 103 is the better unit with better features and will be brand new with a two year warranty. Bill

Bill, appreciate your response! But, unless the 103 upscales 240p/360p/480p video to a much improved level then I would just sell the UMC-1 and buy a used BDP-93 to get closer to the break even point. Keepin' that upgrade certificate though!

Has no one hooked up their computer to the HDMI in on the Oppo BDP-103? See reply #89 above

If the 93 or the 103 can upscale these resolutions how good could they possibly look? If the 93 can upscale these resolutions I would think the 103 would as well. Bill

Mine is hooked up to my computer, but my setup would not be a good comparison. I have ot set up on a 120 inch screen. Also in a youtube video the computer is doing the processing to convert the image to the display of the tv. I do not believe that the oppo would do anything as the oppo would see a 1080 signal from the computer and play it bit for bit and likely see nothing to correct.
sent from my phone. sorry for the short response. Tony

Bill ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was clearly explained in my post #89 about the resolutions. Or at least, I thought it was. Clearer resolution on YouTube may make it easier for my daughter to see what the finders of the pianist is doing say when she is learning from it . Again......if you have ever seen a YouTube video, and clicked on the resolution button on the bottom of the screen it will give you the resolution of that video. Geeeez, I tried to be clear in my post when I stated "I don't want to hear theory. I would like to hear from you that have actually used the 103 to upscale video (computer) and what your opinions are.

Hey Tony, thanks for the input. You said,
"Also in a youtube video the computer is doing the processing to convert the image to the display of the tv. I do not believe that the oppo would do anything as the oppo would see a 1080 signal from the computer and play it bit for bit and likely see nothing to correct." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Two considerations come to mind:
1) Could part of the limitation of the YouTube resolution be a computer's own video card? If the computer is doing the processing wouldn't part of that processing be involving the computer's own video card, or no? And, wouldn't you be bypassing that video card if you connected via HDMI into the Oppo's video processor?
2) What other sources would benefit from the HDMI "in" on the Oppo?
Thanks, Devlon

By my math, worst case, you are asking the youtube video to play up to 22x more info then it has. I dont believe that anything out there can du much for that as there will be more processed info then source.
As for bypassing the processing on the computer. I am not sure how that can be done.
I got to thinking about my own comment about the oppo not doing any processing and I need to clarify that better. The oppo will still have some processing for sharpness, color and contrast.
What it wont do is use any of its upscaling processing. For example, if your computer resolution is 1920/1080:
You play a youtube video. You hit full screen thus having software (not entirely sure which software for a youtube video) force the source which can be as low as 240 to fill the 1080 screen. The upconversion is done. The oppo only saw a 1080 feed for the whole process.
Now since the oppo has built in youtube we can bypass the computer.
I did a quick test this morning using my oppo youtube app. Low quality content looks quite overprocessed but does show improvment over what I see on my tablet. The oppp makes it easy to find hd content by having the choice in only displaying hd content or displaying everything.
If you can find something that gave you trouble on your current method of using youtube. Please give me a link. I will do a comparison on that.
