www.tektondesign.com/products.htmlOn the same website, they have excellent smaller book shelf speakers. Model 65t and 81t. I think the 81t has a larger bass driver and better response. It is also claimed to go to 30 hz. I'd take that with a grain of salt and say about 45-50 hz (which is very low). I WOULD GO WITH THE MODEL 81T. The guy who makes them is the head of the company and the cheif designer himself. He designs for more expensive brands that are well reviewed. So there is no random cheap labor workshop doing these. The speakers will be by him, handmade, and he is a master crafstman so you know you are getting good value for your money. The quality of parts he uses also tends to be better than his competitors. If you give him a call he will discuss with you what your needs are and what the speakers will and won't do and he'll be realistic with you. That kind of personalized attention is rare to get in this game.

I think I would like to keep the amp and speaker at around $400 or so give or take a few dollars here and there. one set i was looking at are these www.definitivetech.com/products/promonitor-800look nice and are pretty small

I have more experience with computer multimedia systems in that price range. Somebody else would probably be better help. A 4 inch driver won't give you amazing bass but I doubt the sound quality will be bad. Good luck with your search. In terms of speakers the emotiva pro airmotiv5 with its inbuilt integrated amp will probably get you where you're going better than most. shop.emotivapro.com/airmotiv_5_p/airmotiv5.htmIt's 50 bucks above your price range. The main disadvantage is that if you ever want to upgrade the speakers you have to spend money on an amplifier (and maybe a sub) to do so. Which is steep. I think sticking to your original plan is better for the long run. Buy the mini-x buy the best speaker for your budget. Then when you are ready all you have to do is upgrade the speaker as the mini-x is pretty capable.

Here is a measurement of one of my 350's in my room. (It is the best of the 4 for the initial mic position before eq and crossovers.) But you can see extension down to 40hz in a +- 3. Attachments:

You maybe better off getting something like the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 and saving a couple hundred bucks. I have a set and they are good awesome for under $200.

Another option if you can find the mini x in a factory renew is www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882325104This will give you a matched sub and 2 spakers. You will have a center and 2 surrounds doing nothing for a while. Its a nice little set and was my first new speaker purchase back in the renting days. sent from my phone. sorry for the short response. Tony

+1 for the XRM's. I don't know guys, I run my Promedia with the older SB Audigy ZS Plat and I think the Klipsch sound pretty damn good for $200 including sub and no need for amps. And I'm not usually a fan of Klipsch...

How dare you come into this lounge, on a football Sunday and tell all of us men that your gf won't let you do something...she's not even your Wife, WTF dude? ;D I think the knot that will be tied in your future is gonna be around your neck! Keep in mind she has bought at least 3 pairs of shoes somewhere while your here crying to use that you can't spend some money! look, since your not getting any anyway, go ahead and spend your original budget and not get any for a little longer. the speakers and amp will make it all right! sorry about the rant, i just can't stand when i see men saying "she won't let me" your not asking for a 3some with a hooker, or gambling the mortgage/rent money away or not feeding the kids either. so unless those things are the case GET WHAT YOU WANT!

Well I think the problem is that I would recommend a minimum level of sound quality. Unfortunately, at the price range, especially for the speakers, it's not easy to get it. That's what makes it hard for me to give you advice that you can use. If it was me, I wouldn't go ahead with the purchase.

If interested in those 350s for 200 a pr. Newegg sale ends the 5th. sent from my phone. sorry for the short response. Tony I just picked up a pair from Newegg. I love comparing different speakers and I seem to collect them especially bookshelf speakers. I want to put them up against the XRM 4.1's. On the subject of bookshelf speakers, two of my favorites are the Polk Audio RTiA1 and the larger RTiA6. I have the RTiA6's connected to a refurbished 2 x 120W Harman Kardon HK3490 stereo receiver which is still available at the HarmanAudio store on ebay for $300. The OP may be interested in its little brother a refurbished 2 x 80W HK3390 which goes for $200. I have the RTiA1's connected to the Qinpu - A-6000 MKII integrated Hybrid tube amp with a whopping 2 x 16.5 WRMS and they sound excellent with my iPod connected. The A-6000 is still available on Amazon for $247 with shipping. The RTiA1's in a black real wood finish are still available at Polk Audio Direct on ebay for $220 a pair. There is an older version , the RTi4's available in cherry (my favorite) or black for $150 a pair. These are very nice speakers. The major difference between the RTiA series and the older RTi series are that the RTi's have square sides vs the more sexy looking curved sides of RTiA series. The RTiA also continue their wood finish up front vs the pewter finish plastic fronts on the RTi speakers. These Polk speakers with real wood finishing are probably the nicest looking speakers in cherry for the price. So to remain under the OP $400 price, the HK3390 and RTi4's would be a good choice at $350. The Qinpu - A-6000 with RTi4 comes in at $397.

LOL the gf is pretty much my fiancee and I was goign to use some of her money to help pay for them. but you know what I got 1 more day to decide on those speakers and I just might pull the trigger on them and sleep on the couch a few days with my speakers and amp lol.
