I like the XLR mainly because they're more robust and secure. With short runs a good quality RCA will perform just as well, however. But your XPA-1Ls are fully balanced so there may be a benefit to you there. Someone that know more about that will have to chime in. Geebo - questions 1. Is the pre-1 fully balanced like the xsp-1? 2. Is the volume knob as touchy as the usp-1? It seems like an incredible deal I don't know about being fully balanced. The volume knob can be a bit touchy but I've not used a USP to compare. With an XPA-2 (32db gain) I usually have the control around 9:00 for my normal listening levels. But I now use the fine control of the XDA-2 to adjust volume for two channel and keep the PRE-1 at around 11:00. $179 IS an incredible deal.

With short runs a good quality RCA will perform just as well I'm up to 5 metres (~16 feet in the old money) and I still can't tell any difference between XLA and RCA's. Is that still a short run? Cheers Gary Short run, long run, it's all relative. How "electrically noisy" your environment is can have a bearing as well.

Just ordered mine. There's none in stock at the moment, but more will be arriving on the 30th. They said that there was only about 50 on the boat and don't think any will be left by Emofest as they're moving fast.

Mine is on the boat too. Too lazy to drive across the border this time for 1 item. Still a great deal!

What I meant to say is the remote control volume touchy? For instance with the usp-1 remote I noticed I had about three to four max clicks of actual useable volume range using the remote (at around the 9 o clock setting) Is it the same for you?

Do you mean how many taps on the remote to go from fully counter clockwise to about 9:00? If so, I's guess better than 3 or 4 taps but not much better...

At the Sherbourn close out price the Pre-1 is a once in a life-time bargain. It is now selling for about one-third of the pre-sale price. The close out price on their power amps are also available at huge discounts. Jump while they are still available.

The only thing that held me back on this was the hope that a Tube Pre was coming out from emotiva some time.

Yes that's what I meant. Not a deal breaker but good to know. Thanks. I shall probably get it used at some point.... I'll try to remember to try that tonight and see. With my Harmony remote it was seven taps from full counter clockwise to 9:00.

Can any PRE-1 owners give a description of the remote? Possibly post a picture? Does it have controls for the CD-1......will it control an ERC-1?
Also, does it need to be powered on in order to utilize the HT by-pass? And if the answer is yes, how are the lights on the front, bright? Can they be dimmed/turned off?

How "electrically noisy" your environment is can have a bearing as well. Let's see, what's in my Zone 3 (garage) ; mig welder linisher angle grinder air compressor die grinder pedestal drill rattle gun, drill and a few more battery power tools air conditioner dust extractor band saw 2kw of halogen lights fixed parts washer plus a portable high pressure washer The RCA's from the UMC-200 for Zone 3 are around 20 metres (60 feet). I'd consider that a long run with plenty of electrical noise. Cheers Gary

It doesn't have controls for any players just the for the PRE-1 itself, a great remote though, prob my favorite Emotiva/Sherbourn remote and still aluminum but more ergonomic Attachment Deleted
