Resurrecting an old thread... Just a quick post of my latest addition to my JBL family. I had an original B460 sub in my living room and decided that I wanted another but mirrored - since JBL never made mirrored pairs. I have a full build thread over at Lansing Heritage Forum. My original is on the left and my mirrored clone on the right. These are powered by Emotiva XPA-1 on each side through minidsp.

Talented for sure! Nice job, way above most skill levels! Thanks for the comment. I wouldn't say my skill level is that talented. I just took my time, had to redo some stuff, but generally enjoyed myself. Raw materials, drivers etc. Probably cost me around $500 so I think it was good value all-in-all.

One more resurrection for the new important additions to the stable. Now have 3x JBL 5732, though I'm not currently using the 5732-M/HF on the center unit since it would obscure my screen. Instead using a 4722n-HF horn on the 5739 center bass bin while I wait to get the projection screen done. I also have 4x 4722n for sides and rear - that's 14 instances of 15 inch cones for midbass... 5732's a three way design, powered by one Crown DSI 2000 in bridge mode for each bass bin and one DSI 1000 split to run the mid and the high frequency. Side and rear 4722n's are powered by Gen 1 XPA-1's and Frankenstein center is powered by a Gen 2 XPA-1 on the supplied network. I already had the 4642a, that's also powered by a DSI 2000 in bridge mode. Still re-arranging the room hence the mess. How does it sound? In a word...scale. That's the best way to describe it. From the specs you'd think they don't go that low and therefore they won't sound that good, perhaps just loud; but that couldn't be further from the truth. When you watch a movie and the action moves into a nightclub, the sound just scales to that level effortlessly. It actually shocks you every time because you're not expecting it to get that visceral but it just does. Then you'll listen to a gentle guitar or violin piece and it surprises you with its delicacy. Deftness and headroom for days. It can absolutely go louder than anyone can stand, I want to say peak SPL is 134dB - so far above reference it's scary. That said, I feel I've reached my ideal, certainly for movies. Though to be honest I've found myself just playing music way past the time I would normally go to bed just because they're such a pleasure to listen to.

As you can tell by my signature , I'm kind of a JBL Speaker fan-boy. I just wanted to share this link for the "Kenrick Sound" YouTube page. They are out of Japan and specialize in restoring and modifying classic JBL monitors. They do work on other brands too , but mostly JBL. This guy and his company do some Amazing! work! Check it out if that kind of stuff interest you. I always get a kick out of my Wife when she walks in on me watching some of the many videos Kenrick has produced. I just tell her Im watching some more Speaker Porn. She usually laughs and walks away , shaking her head. Anyhow , here it is. Kenrick SoundEnjoy! I spend quite a bit of time in Japan. I'll have to include Kenrick Sound if I ever have time to go there to Ōta City, near Tokyo. As you must know the Japanese go ballistic over JBL speakers. I just love going into Japanese high end shops, with all the awesome horns. Great classic thread!

If you have 20 minutes to spare you really need to see the lengths these guys go to , to deliver these JBL 4350s , to this guys condo. Its a little long but worth it. I absolutely love this video! It is so Japanese! My Japanese Mama's place and family mochi shop across the street are only a half block away from a two story high end store. As you might know most Japanese live in relatively small residences, many multi-floor apartments and condos (they are called mansions). Some are reasonably roomy but usually the elevators are not big enough for two people and two suitcases. I asked one of the owner's who speaks some English, how do they get the big horn speakers up to them. He said in fairly clear English knowing I was a Gaijin foreigner/American, " big PITA". I got a great laugh as he used words like lift, hoist, ropes ,etc. I understood as I had seen pianos and other big objects going up. The 4530 were some of my all time favorite speakers to drool over, they just looked so cool with that blue face! Marantz had a big speaker, rather obscure, that I almost bought with similar blue face that was also great looking. I know this thread is 4 years old or so. Don't know how I missed it back then, maybe back on my birth planet or perhaps preoccupied with cancer issues during that time. It is titled Great JBL Speaker Porn so my humor should allow me to say I just spend quite a bit of time going thru it and had multiple orgasms looking at all the gorgeous JBL photos! Sad some were deleted by Photobucket!

I would take a 4 foot tall JBL sub that hits flat to 22 Hz (-3 dB) with External EQ any day over a little box sub that might hit 15-20Hz at a whisper. Absolutely awesome! PS: Does it sound as good as Bose?

Volume has more than two positions (on/off) After listening to this, I couldn't go back and be happy with anything I've had previously. If you have the space; can get past the utilitarian looks; for the money there's nothing to touch them. PS: Does it sound as good as Bose? You know as awesome as it is, I still have to tip my hat to a good Bose Acoustimas. There's just some hills you can't climb

Seeing this thread is having some activity here is a little more. Yes! That's what I like to see, some old-school magic. Quite a few sets you've got there. Always wanted to hear some L220's. How do you like them?

How do you like them? The L220's are great speakers, good bass and the mid's & high's come through nicely. Not shown in the picture are my L300's which I believe sound much better than the 220's due to the mid horns.

I have never done anything with an active crossover so I decided to put together some speakers and a tri-amp system. Being an old JBL enthusiast and having some of the components I bought a few parts and now have the speakers. I will be using 2235H woofers, 2441 compression drivers/horn for the mid’s and 2404 tweeters. Amplifiers are a little over kill, XPA-1’s for the woofers and a XPA-3 4 channel for the mid’s and high’s. I have been working on modifying some cabinets that I had to put everything into, if everything works out how I hope then I might have some cabinets built.

Keep us up to date with your progress. I'd like to see how it turns out. I have enough raw drivers to build some 4355 and 4345 clones - just haven't got round to it yet. Maybe early next year. Perhaps you're experiment will spur me into action
