I'd get the Studio 20's. Look at the Emotiva website for current offerings. They sound serious about speakers but the offerings are at best thin. IMO they should have never stopped making the Reference series speakers. JMHO. Plus One! IMHO I felt that Emo did not promote the Reference series as much as they could have with specific performance/price adds . Just the marvelous comments at the Audiholics review would have made for superb add quotes. I know it is difficult to get the big mag/websites to review your speakers unless you have the full one page adds in HT Mag and S&V Mag (now down to one). Perhaps the much more recognizable name of Emotiva when the new folded ribbon speakers are released will draw lots of attention, especially if they promote the obvious price advantage. I'm hoping the new series will include a center, surround and at least one bookshelf speaker to compete with the Studio 20's for example.

I am sure the 6.3s make fine surround speakers. They are fantastic HT speakers, I have just outgrown them for 2 channel. No fault to the 6.3s in 2 channel, this is not why I originally purchased them, but it seems as if I will be limited to one system for some time so you gotta make do. I sure hope you have properly set up the 6.3's along with your sub for a 2.1 test. I have auditioned the 6.3 in my room and they are superb speakers, only missing the 70Hz or below range. A musical sub should be a great match. My Emo ERM-1's are simply the higher end of the 8.3's without the low dual woofer's. The majority of the sound is almost identical since the three drivers (tweeter and two mid/bass) are identical.

They are a seriously good speaker IMO. Good luck finding a set though. What I've found is the ERM-1's (bedroom setup) set up with a good sub or two come close but can't quite match the 8.3s in the lower mids. My 12" sub carries the lower end and the HK990 cuts the 8.3's off at 60hz. Must be those pair of 8" woofers. Not too many speakers have more than 6" any more. You might look for a pair of Revel F12s - or even the F32s. I've seen them on Audiogon for cheap - like $1200 for the pair. And the best part is you can use your 6.3 for the center since it will timbre match with the Revels. I owned Infinity IL40s for many years and found out the Revel uses the same tweeter as in the IL line and the IL40s timbre matched with the 6.3 I was using with them. Who knew? I have a friend with the F32s - its a draw between my 8.3's and his F32s. He paid lots more for those Revels than I did for the 8.3's. He was floored by this but does agree they are very close. All I could say was "I told you!"

Chuckie, I don't know if you recall but I took your words strongly a couple of years back when deciding on my Emotiva purchases. I do love my 6.3s, don't get me wrong. I have a dickens of a time with my living room. Simply put, it's a black hole. I have tried every configuration you could imagine. Sub placement is the hardest task. In a smaller, tighter room the 6.3s are glorious at lower levels. I can't say enough about them in that setting. I feel that larger tower speakers with bigger drivers will help to compensate for my room. Maybe they wont? Maybe I need to move?

Garbulky's Airmotiv 4 review brings up yet ANOTHER set of questions about the upcoming passive speaker line from Emotiva:
Will it use the same tweeters as the Airmotiv & Stealth lines (or one with similar technology)? The photo that Dan posted seemed to show that it would. If it does, will it be as vertically placement sensitive as the current tweeters? If so, then being able to tilt the towers will be CRITICAL to getting the best out of them.
Will it use a midrange based on the ribbon tweeter technology? If so, then the mid & tweeter better be REALLY CLOSE together in order for the listener to be on the vertical axis of both.
And finally, the really BIG question: Since the new speakers will likely use ribbon technology for the tweeter (and maybe the midrange) will the "homogenizing effect" be the same as with the Airmotiv series? Garbulky noted it - I said so in my AM4 review - paintedklown notes it also. This is NOT just an opinion - it's an inherent artifact of the tweeter technology. If the new Emo towers DO "forgive" hot mixes and poor recordings the way that the Airmotiv series does, then they may NOT be the speakers for me. I prefer accuracy, thanks, even if it's ugly sometimes.
Before KeithL jumps in and tells me that we can't accurately tell what's on the recording, I'll agree with the premise, but point out that if the recording SOUNDS bright (and does so on multiple different systems) then the fault lies not with the reproducers but with the recording. I think that we can ALL agree that some of our recordings sound "more lifelike" than others. If the bad ones and good ones sound equally "fair," then the reproduction system isn't accurate.
The Airmotiv (and maybe the Stealth) tweeters aren't accurate. I apologize for inciting a firestorm (again) with this statement, but when multiple lounge members ALL comment on how "smooth" the Airmotiv tweeters make recordings sound, then this is no longer an opinion. Some love that smoothness, but ultimately, it is not accurate to the recording.
So the question of note for the new passive Emotiva speakers is "Will they sound similar to the Airmotivs?" If so, then they're not the speakers for me.

Boomzilla I know you have been on the hunt for some new speakers. I'll just give you my two cents on the stealth 8 that I heard at Emofest in Chicago. Hooked up to the XDA-2 and a laptop. I'm not sure what the quality of the recording was but I felt they were ok but not great...and nowhere near the "special" level you appear to seek. So I'm not sure how great the passive speakers will be if they are based on the stealth 8. This was right when I got my Revel F208 though so I may be a bit critical, because the F208 is a "special" speaker IMHO and light years better than the stealth 8. You have a lot of shopping around to do...patience is key....or just get the Revels

Yes, Lsc - I've heard Revels, Avalons, & Thiels that sounded, to my ears, better than anything else I'd heard. I'm not going to diss the new Emotiva speakers yet; they may be more than the sum of their parts. But that said, I may also not be in the front of the line to buy them until I've read some reviews of the Emo towers vs. the Airmotiv & Stealth lines.

But that said, I may also not be in the front of the line to buy them until I've read some reviews of the Emo towers vs. the Airmotiv & Stealth lines. You make a good point. I must confess I am a bit more optimistic for this reason. There are different models and sizes of folded ribbons. There are tower speakers utilizing folded ribbons that cost huge amounts of money like with Adam audio. I doubt they would sell much if they had a poor dispersion/sound etc. These Legacy aeris stand nearly 5 feet and the AMT are located near the top. Well above ear level at a seated position. If the dispersion was aweful I doubt they could sell it for the 19k price these go for. The reviews also don't really mention any dispersion issues. But of course just because these high end speakers exist doesn't have much bearing on whether the Emo speakers will sound good. Just that there is a possibility despite the seeming limitations of the previous models you noted. We just have to wait and see. Hopefully we shall all be rewarded!

But do you really think the components in the Revels and other speakers are that different? I'm sure the high end speaker companies have higher overhead (and margins). Heck, I bet at least 3/4 of the real cost of a Thiel is just in the cabinet. I've just seen way too many speakers that cost thousands of dollars and only have a couple hundred dollars in drivers.

Garbulky - Agreed - the proof is in the listening. I may need an Emofest audition before being ready to buy, though. Since I've got free airfare & hotel nights, Emofest would cost me only time & the token registration fee. If I go, though, I'm putting "Garbulky" on my name tag! LOL

You say more than the sum of their parts.... But do you really think the components in the Revels and other speakers are that different? I'm making no comment at all about the value of the Emotiva speakers vs. their price. I am saying that the components that may be used (specifically the ribbon style tweeter as used in the Airmotiv & Stealth lines) may not be accurate enough for my taste, unless Emotiva has significantly changed the sound of the design.

Sorry - I misinterpreted "sum of their parts" as financial and not performance results. Got it.
Thanks!

Boom, a serious question for a change. I wonder if you (and other folks too) might hear what you describe as accurate that others hear as an elevated high end or slightly bright. Many times when I hear someone say the Emo silk dome tweeter or the folded ribbon in my Airmotiv4 might be smooth but not accurate, my ears disagree. To me smooth means natural, accurate, low distortion and flat, not bright or overly defined. This of course is personal preference but many speakers that have a elevated high treble seem to appeal to many as accurate. If I remember your DT 65's have an elevated high end. To me accurate primarily means flat with very low distortion. Maybe you are referring to other speaker as being accurate. Just curious of your thoughts on this. "I may also not be in the front of the line to buy them until I've read some reviews of the Emo towers vs. the Airmotiv & Stealth lines."
I don't believe the new Emo passive towers will be designed to compete with the Emo powered monitors, especially the Airmotiv line. Perhaps some folks like Monku will have the perfect fit for the Stealth's, but I think most will prefer a speaker or 5 of them in their audio/HT room that do not have power cords or RCA/XLR cables to deal with. Just some food for thought.
