Trinnov or no Trinnov, and I want to apologize now for anyone taking offense to this, but Outlaw products are BUTT UGLY. Just an opinion, but I can't put a BUTT UGLY processor in my rack and have to look at it everyday, when I can put a processor that looks good and performs to my satisfaction in my rack. Again this is just my opinion, and we haven't seen the XMC-1 yet, but if its similar to the MMC-1 in looks, it will be way better to look at and won't be the red-headed step-child of pre/pro's. As someone that has been in this hobby for almost 40 years, I have to say this...... I would take a butt ugly product that sounded great over a great looking product that sounded so so. I have heard lot's of pre-amps and processors in my time. I bought an Outlaw 970 to tide me over until the XMC is available. I have to admit that for the money and for what it does, this is one great sounding product. I have heard Onkyo's, Denon's, Pioneer Elite's, Classe, Rotel, Marantz, and more, even Emotiva, and I will say this much about the Outlaw...... It sounds as good or better than many of the brands I mentioned. And it don't look too shabby in my rack either.

Yeah, I'm not sure why Outlaw gets the "butt ugly" comment so much any more. I'll admit that their earlier products with the big green button kind of had "a face only a mother could love". I say that currently owning the original Model 1050 receiver in all it's green-Skittle-power-button glory. I actually think their current cosmetic treatment is pretty classy - looks quite a bit like a spiffed up version of the older NAD products.
In any event, Outlaw makes some very nice products for the price. I happen to think that the Emotiva products represent an even better value, however. I'll say that I prefer the Emotiva aesthetics, but that's certainly a personal preference.

I think that I am going to have to wait for the XMC. I believe that the UMC-1 will meet most of my needs, but. I am afraid that if I get it I will regret it, and then end up upgrading again. I would like to have the Headphone jack, and some of the other features. This hobby is both fun and nerve racking at the same time.

Why not just use a Squeeze Box, Roku or similar with a digital interconnect? That's an off the shelf solution that works great. Casey Well mostly because its another gadget, with another interconnect, both potentially degrading sound quality, that don't need to be there. My question is, if the USB port is already there as is the DAC, how much effort is involved in making the USB into an input? It may be a great amount of effort, in which case this feature should be left out. If it's a small amount of effort it may be worth considering. I just dunno. The rest of the specs look great. I love the fact that there are dual balanced XLR outputs that can be hooked up to a pair of XPA-1s for audiophile music system. While I'm on the subject of streaming. Anyone know, if there are players that will stream music/audio over HDMI. If so then the whole USB input would be a moot point, as I could use an HDMI connection from my computer to this pre. Rudy So moving on, or rather back, to something else for a moment....What is wrong with standard digital output from the PC? Unless there is inferior design in some way damaging the signal in the audiocard (but wouldn't that likely affect USB audio out, too?), this has got to be a more common usage than USB audio output. I'm a Mac guy, all recent Macs have optical audio, remote controls and pretty decent software solutions, so they are ready to stream out of the box. The same can be accomplished with Windows PCs, as well. And the XMC-1 currently has 8 SPDIF inputs compared to one USB. Not sure why you want to have the software in the prepro instead.

In this situation the Outlaw in my opinion is butt ugly and sounds great, while I know first hand that Emotiva processors sound great and are, in my opinion, quite attractive in the looks department. Again I'm not trying to bash Outlaw, I'm just stating my opinion on what I believe to be appealing as opposed to un-appealing or in this case "butt ugly".

I'll be honest with you. I have seen some "Butt Ugly" components in my days, and the Outlaw processors are far from it. Their receiver on the other hand is a different story. Secondly, I have heard the RSP-2 and actually prefer the sound of my Outlaw 970 better. The XMC-1, which I am waiting for, better blow my socks off, otherwise my processor upgrade just may turn out to be the new Outlaw 997.

Yea that trinnov optimizer suer is tempting , but I`m going to stay with the XMC and let that optimizer mature a few years then maybe the predecessor to the XMC will have it or maybe something even better will come out of it down the road

Considering the commercial unit is $14,000 and the same size as a receiver or processor by itself, and the consumer version will fit inside a receiver or processor , and be thou$$$ands cheaper, I wonder if they can live up to that claim. My biggest comparison will be SQ, because I feel I can optimize my room pretty well by ear alone. Any room EQ will be done as a start or reference point, with fine tuning to be done afterwards. Basically, the same as I did when I calibrated my TV picture.

I'm wondering the Outlaw 997 will have PLIIz, that might be the decider for me (along with TTM of course). I'm still looking at options for sub(s) and a processor. I want something soon but do not want to lose my presence channels - I want something with something similar included. Trinnov sure sounds tempting too. It claims to reposition speakers virtually including in the vertical plane, so I wonder can it do/does it do virtual height channels as well? It would be pretty cool to have virtual height (that works) at the sides and rear as well.

We all have seamingly left off the XMC-1's greatest technological advancement: Cloaking Device P.S. The prototype of this technology is in beta testing on the UMC-1

Wow... 10 HDMI inputs and 2 outputs! No component in/outs.. Yep, welcome to the 21st Century. Bye-bye analog video, and if you want to incorporate analog audio buy an analog preamp.

I'm not disagreeing with you since I do not have any analog stuff but some might.. I cannot think of 10 HDMI components to hook up with this baby! Wait, Emotiva are producing that HDMI toaster, right? ;D

Wait, Emotiva are producing that HDMI toaster, right? ;D Yea, maybe 10 is too many... but it was easier to just duplicate the HDMI I/O array on the UMC-1 image than it would have been to change it. ;D
