Not at all. I think the analogy is accurate and I think at my cost means it will cost the person saying at my cost. Not at my cost and then you will pay me for it. I deleted my post because I figured it was only polite to do so. I don't purposely start fires So I figured I would just answer your question which is yeah I read it as free. You appear to be confusing the terms "at my cost" (which means I, as the seller, will charge you what it cost me for the item I plan to sell you) with "at my expense" (which means I, as the seller, shall bear all expenses associated with providing you something and you owe me nothing). See the difference? Mark I see the difference you are trying to shoe horn in to "at my cost."

It would seem to me that if 299.00 is "cost" then it should add more than that amount for new purchases, as cost is "available to existing XMC-1 customers at our cost" Except that that cost is offest my not having to put in the current HDMI board. It could very well cost the same as or very close to the new board.

Sorry, but to me 299 is expensive for an add on board. I can build a fully functioning computer for that price easily. They won't lose money on it as that board will be installed in every prepro they sell from here on out and any future prepro Emotiva designs for the next few years at least. The money they spent on R/D developing it will be recouped and then some.

I would like to share my 2 cents. Why is it they will install the board and ship it back for 299 then those of us who live to far away and are capable of installing it ourselves should get the board itself at a reduced cost. There are plenty of international customers that fall into this category. Probably it whoould be $299 plus the international real cost shipping. Fair to everybody IMO

At cost means that you will recieve a product for what it cost the maker, manufacturer or inventor to research, developmen, manufacture, distribute and shipping, also incuded in the "Cost" of anything should include but not limited too the packaging, business insurance, employees unemployment insurance, healthcare, as well as all taxes involve,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Fed incometax, state incometax, FICA ETC. LETS NOT FORGET THE propertytax, and supply taxes. Then theres the CPA, electric company telephone and internet cost of which is taxed again. I could go on,,,,,,but how the heck could anybody possibly mean free?? There is NO FREE!!! Period!! economics 101, but I digress!!!

Yes I think that would be what most people would assume.... Well now if companies operated like that, how long do you think they'd be around to continue to provide you with stuff "at cost" (i.e., "free" based on how you define it) and be around to service it? No company can continue to operate at a loss. Only the U.S. Government can continue operating at a loss and that's because they just increase taxes to pay for it all -- which then means it has a cost, that cost being borne by us. If private companies did the same thing they'd be out of business in no time. Going back to Mark's example of the station wagon... let's say I was over your house and accidentally knocked over a vase. When I offer to pay for it, you tell me to just reimburse you for your "cost." I smile and say thank you as I don't have to pay you anything. You just told me I could reimburse you for it at your cost and so I assume that means it is free for me. Does that sound right? Why would the XMC-1 upgrade be any different? [edit] - okay, I just read what you posted while I was typing this. I am assuming you thought the upgrade was included in YOUR own cost as a purchaser, not Emo's cost of doing the upgrade. I get it, but that makes no sense because a company can't continue providing "free" upgrades on anything and stay in business unless they build it into the original price. If that is what Dan meant then he would have said all future upgrades are included with the original purchase price of the XMC-1. If I tell you to reimburse me for my cost then you would reimburse me for how much I paid for it. If I said don't worry. I will replace it at my own cost. Then I would assume that I didn't have to pay for it. I don't expect the XMC-1's upgrades to be free! I never did. However I was referring to this particular upgrade referred to in his particular post. HDMI 2 announcement was controversial namely because the XMC-1 never really had HDMI 2 and it was particularly obvious. Didn't take a detective to figure out hether it had HDMI 2. It took me three mouse clicks. So people were understandbly dissapointed. THen he posted this. I thought good on Emotiva. They've done this in the past when a product didn't perform as promised. They fixed it. (Though technically this wasn't a fix but an upgrade). For instance they did so with the XDA_1 volume control issue. They did so with the XPA-1 Ls. It was on Emotiva's dime. They stepped up. So I was happy when I saw that post as I understood were others. Well it's obvious that that's not the case as I see it. But it is what it is. I'm happy the XMC-1 will have HDMI 2 soon and that Emotiva is taking care of the customers in its own way.

I don't think people read my original post.....let me stick it here highlighting what you all are repeating to me. "The other one is that the upgrade will be provided at the cost it was to provide it no profit. Now if anybody thinks it costs $300 to buy an HDMI 2 board and install it and ship it, I have a bridge to sell you. Now the third way to intepret it is I think what is the reality. The XMC-1 is designed to be upgraded. Providing the OPTION of an HDMI 2 board to existing users is where Emotiva does it at their cost (likely at a profit).

Yes, $300.00 aint cheap, but,,,,,,,,, [/quote]

I hope this is not bait and switch tactics. They need to clarify all of this. So what is their cost to build the board, install it, and ship the XMC back to you? I don't know. How about sending me the board so i could install it myself at "cost"?

That simply means that whatever their cost is, that's what we can get it for.

And if we're going to stir this pot a little more,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Who picks up the "Cost" of a board shipped out and broken by the end user?? Broken in shipping?? Shipped out broken but not detected until installed by end user?? Yep,,,,,Devils advocate,,,,,,,what can I say? ? PS,,,,,,,,,,I dont want to hand over $300.00 either for this upgrade,,,,,but?? Whats the fair price to those of us that purchased with a promise?? Is Emotiva ripping us off by asking that price?? Do y'all really think they didn't anguish over stating what they thought was the "fair "cost" price?? These are questions each owner needs to deside on and move on from there. They were NEVER going to make us all thrilled happy, thats a FACT!!' Im not taking sides and am undecided, this is a choice I will have to make for myself.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I must admit, I'm a bit perplexed at how the statement, "We'll be making it available at our cost..." can be interpreted in more than one way. Meaning the end user will be paying what Emotiva is paying.

That said, in this context they do not mean the same thing.

Since the price to install it yourself is the same as Emotiva installing the board, it would seem that $299 is their cost for this board.
It might well be that this board has to be different than the one that may ultimately be included during manufacturing, and thus MAY be considered a custom board in a limited run. Either custom or limited will run up the cost of the board.
