If Emotiva would have made a XMC-1L with seven channels and no Atmos I would hve snatched it up in a heartbeat. I have been hanging here since the beginning and watched the UMC-1 thinking that would be cool. I bought the Fusion AV receiver on sale just to give it a try. The XMC-1 was going to be $999 or something. The price tag now is the only thing that keeps me from clicking buy and I can afford it. It has what I want with the TI chips and better operating system. I do not need the balanced 2 channel or Dirac. I am never going to use more than five speakers for my surround system and Dolby HD is just fine with me. Who in the hell is going to have fourteen speakers in there living room other than you audio nuts ? Not me, but last year I helped a friend set up a 5.1.2 Atmos system and, as I have reported several times, it was/is pretty damn good (his layout is Dolby approved). Loses hardly anything at all to a 7.2.4 system in another friends house. Our lounge room is a large space, with cathedral ceilings, but the watching/listening area is much smaller. So my system has to have some grunt to fill the space but at the same time be OK for closer field listening. It's acoustically pretty good, not much correction required. So the XMC-1L with 7.2 channels would have been OK to switch to 5.1.2 for Atmos/DTSX. I could overcome my dislike of heights long enough to fit up pair of ceiling speakers. I've even spoken to my speaker designer/manufacturer and he has some ceiling speakers that will match up quite nicely with the rest of my system. Plus I have 2 channels of the XPA-5 that I only use occasionally when we have a group on the veranda. So it's a pretty easy set up for me. I just need a 5.1.2 capable processor, that doesn't cost an arm and leg because I know it's going to be out of date in 2 to 3 years. Cheers Gary

No more sales... Jadedesign eBay prices are too high as well...
Emotiva priced their own customers out. Well except for some here.

Who in the hell is going to have fourteen speakers in there living room other than you audio nuts ? Fourteen? Nah! although I confess I often dream of going up from my current 5.2 setup to a 7.2.4 once I upgrade my XMC-1 to the Atmos/DTS-X specs..., which will bring me up to 13 speakers... Okay I agree, thirteen speakers in the same room sounds sorta nuts! although things get a little complicated here, because the wife thinks that my current 5.2 setup is already "nuts," so what's a guy to do ? If I were just an audio nut, I could easily get by with a 2-channel stereo system in each listening station... However, I also happen to be a video/movie "nut" who must have all his channels properly separated, so is there any way out of this ? We are currently in the hunt for a new home, and I hope we get one with a sufficiently large basement that can serve as our main viewing/listening room . Talk about "first world" problems, huh? (Place facepalm here)

I'm not recommending in-walls for the "big-3" (the right, center, & left), only for the side, rear, and ceiling speakers.

As long as they are all timbre matched?

Well... Axiom Audio DOES make both stand-alone and in-wall speakers that ARE supposed to be at least somewhat timbre-matched.

(Place facepalm here) It's really not all that complicated. I'm running 7.4.4 so 15 speakers. I'd do more if I had the right processor to take advantage of it. Once you start cutting in the ceiling you may as well put in what you want before you close the wall up. I actually watch Blu-ray movies to listen to the audio tracks

Since this thread got revived from the dead (much like phonograph records), I've opted to change the title. Poor Mr. @roryb gets serious heartburn, I suspect, every time his eyes happened to espy the previous title. I've come to like and respect Mr. Rory, even though we may disagree from time to time. That being the case, I chose to change the title.
Still a good discussion...
Cheers - Boom

Agreed, at least not for me, and not in itself... It is only when considering the WAF factor that some gremlins begin to muddy the waters

As regards the title, I was over it, but thanks for thinking of me.
