At the low end of the price spectrum, there's little point in trying to compete with Pioneer, Yamaha, Onkyo, Sony, and Harman. Those units are so stripped-down for their given feature set and power rating that if we made a product exactly like them, we couldn't be profitable, because we couldn't bring ourselves to build them marginally enough to compete. The BasX MC-700 and the A-700 will fit into the same shelf space occupied by a top-end receiver or HT integrated amp, and you get the benefits of separates such as better isolation of signals and an upgrade path for your amplification or your decoding without replacing the other components. With the receiver approach, if a technology such as Atmos2 or HDR11 comes out, you don't need to chuck your amplifier too, just swap out the processor. Where does Stereo fit into this? Many persons don't have the space or inclination for HT. I've been content with good stereo for a long time and feel that for any given budget, you're better off with a good stereo than HT. Think TA-100 What else do you need?

Well, if I went receiver, I'd still want enough power for my Panels. Years ago I auditioned a KRELL integrated, the KAV-400 which was fine but ran too warm for where I had to put it.
These days? The best combo of power and features in a one-box solution would be the Parasound Halo Integrated. It'll kick out well north of 250 a side before reaching 1% distortion which should work well for low-sensitivity Maggies. 4ohm power. Good, flexible feature set and even has Tone Controls (deferrable)
I still can't imagine just WHAT I'd do with FM?

I'd start with an XSP-1 preamp section and add the stereo amp from a G3 level amp.
Make a serious stab at bringing it in for maybe 1500$ While less would be better, I'm not asking for an entry level product. This would be an Aspirational level piece and could be the centerpiece of ANY serious system.
To upgrade from THIS would require some serious coin for any real benefit.

Maybe $450...if it's manufacturer direct and they can't sell a multibit for $450 in large quantities then that company has problems...Schiit is doing a $250 multibit that's knocking peoples socks off...

So, $250. For a multi bit DAC and a bunch of other goodies for another $200. That may be a tall order for a quality piece of kit. I don't know,,,,,,,maybe I just don't get it. But maybe possible, need to sell bunches of whatever is offered.

As long as the receiver isn't based off of the same architecture as the umc, MC 700. That needs to be be discontinued just like airbags from Tacata.

Agreed...I will say this though...you can make it exponentially more complicated and more expensive when you have to have isolated channels and more r2r ladders in a multibit dac...the schiit yggy is very expensive and close to state of the art without spending $10,000. Maybe a newer sigma delta dac utilizing akm newest 4497 chips with separate channels for a very low noise floor. I could see that done for maybe $600 manufacturer direct as long as you stay away from expensive transformers for each channel.

Does anybody REALLY need or even listen to FM, except maybe in the car? I have had no urge to listen to FM, which has been programmed and compressed to the point of making me want to upchuck in maybe a decade. When I want some 'music' for housecleaning or mindless background, my Small Dish does pretty good. Several Jazz feeds, and much rock divided by decade, group and 'hardness'. The 32khz feed is quite good and I'd judge to be somewhat better than any flavor of MP3. I use the very good DAC in my Parasound P5. My 'critical' DAC is a Cambridge Audio DacMagic+ of very high flexibility.
So, if you are willing to 'skip' the FM, that space and expense can be put to better use in any number of ways in an Integrated Amp of Medium to High spec.

The receiver (or preamp, or integrated amp) that I'd like to see anyone make is a two-channel model which includes HDMI switching. I believe there are many enthusiasts who listen to movies/video in stereo, who aren't interested in all the surround modes. However, there is nothing I can find that combines this in one convenient, compact chassis (and it would be a spouse-friendly component). A bonus would be a large display on the unit which is readable across the room and a good GUI. Whatever happened to choosing stereo mode for yourself and maybe surround mode for your spouse? My wife could care two flips for surround. A pair of Khorns, a big subwoofer, and voila, we're surrounded. Did it for awhile, but prefer stereo, both of us. The HT market isn't fueled primarily by our ladies any more than the ladies' shoe market is driven by male purchases.

Ohhhhh very nice but financially outta my league haha Tell me about it... For that price tag (and size!) Emotiva separates would be a better value. I still think it would have been nice if Emotiva had released the 8200 that Sherbourn had in the works, just as it released the Fusion 8100 based on the SR-8100: Back then Sherbourn announced them together:

Just get a Pioneer. Market is congested with options. I voted no, however I would be interested in something pretty simple even with 5 channels of amplification and cheaper than my Trusty Pioneer. how about a nice yammy..

Based on my LIMITED listening tests and under conditions, I'll still go with HK amp sections. Denon and Marantz are part of the same 'group' (DM Holdings?) None of the other HT receiver builders do anything that would even pretend to drive my speakers. HT receivers just don't do anything for me. While I haven't made the tour, most HT setups are compromised, which is NOT the same as saying ALL are compromised. I just don't get investing in what is essentially a disposable component. FM is dead, so a RECEIVER these days, even a good stereo model, would be OUT.
