I got an email from Lonnie on Friday.
“We have noticed similar issues here and have addressed them in the latest beta code we are testing. If all goes well, we plan to release it to the wild early next week.”
This in response to my updating information about sync issues and center channel dropping.

Going to wait for others to test it before messing with my XMC-1 which is performing very well.

Navigating through the Menu system the response is quicker. I can press the buttons quicker like I used to be able to do with the 1.4 board.

I've been using v5.6 now for 5 days solid and my XMC-1 is consistently handshaking and holding a lock onto my 1080p Comcast/Pace STB at bootup as well as changing inputs between all of my sources. The rest of my 4K sources work like a charm as before(which includes an Oppo UDP-203/Panasonic DP-UB820/AppleTV 4K/FireTV 4K pendant/cube). This version adds per/input, a choice of HDMI 1.4 or HDMI 2.0, for which ever type source you may be using. PCM 5.1 material still isn't processing 7.1 with DPLIIx, but it does with DD5.1/DD+5.1. To date this latest firmware v5.6 has worked the best for me in my home theater.

I installed 5.6 without issue, I had only installed the official 5.4 a few days ago after my winter away from the system. I only ran a few tests but most of my gear seems to be working properly, and specifically I haven’t had the ‘Mac mini’ problem in some time. I tested the mini via both HDMI and TOSLink and then switched back to DirecTV, all worked well. I haven’t played any disks yet, but the Oppo GUI displays properly. I have been having a problem with AppleTV4K where I’m getting the ‘washed out’ look with any setting other than Dolby Vision 4K, this was also visible with 5.4. One of the early ATV4K / V3 problems was that 4K Dolby Vision was washed out, now it’s the only setting that isn’t, not sure when this started.

Just installed 5.6. The two problems I was having, no audio/no video on turn on occasionally. Will need to monitor.
The other issue is center channel not coming on when turning on. This has not changed. Have to toggle between speaker presets to get the center channel to come on.
What did this firmware address?

That is one really weird problem, is it all devices or just one? I don't understand how it is possible for one channel only to go MIA, let alone the same channel. I assume you have tried all of the usual fault finding tricks? Swapped the speaker leads, interconnects, tested the FL or FR as a centre, swapped around amp channels etc. Cheers Gary

This has not changed. Have to toggle between speaker presets to get the center channel to come on. What did this firmware address? With this firmware update, it is vital that you not skip instruction #2 in the release notes. In fact, I go beyond what is said and leave all of my components unplugged from the power outlet for 1/2 hour. IMO, 10 seconds is not long enough to drain off the residual power and reset the HDMI boards in all of your components. After my 1/2 hour wait, I plug in the power to my TV and the XMC-1. I turn on the TV, let it boot to the “no signal” screen and then power up the XMC-1. After the XMC-1 fully boots, I plug in my Oppo, boot it up, wait for the home screen to appear and test it for proper operation. After confirming my first source component is working properly, I move on to the next one. Rinse and repeat until all sources are done. If you encounter issues with older components that are not officially HDMI 2.0 compatible, it is recommended to go into the settings for that input and change the new HDMI compatibility selection switch to “HDMI 1.4” and see if that resolves your issues. Give this a try and see if it helps. I have been using 5.6 for about two weeks and after a few initial hiccups (and doing what I mentioned above), my XMC-1 has been running pretty stable.

Initial turn on, Directv/XMC-1/Amp.....all powers up, picture and sound come on, no center sound. So I use the XMC-1 remote and toggle to preset 1 or 2, sound comes on and back to Dirac. All is fine. It's not the cables or anything else in the system. This is with Directv....I will try the Oppo 203 tonight to see if I get the same result. This happened with the previous firmware also. I have mentioned this multiple times and was hoping that this new firmware would have addressed the issue. I don't believe I'm the only one this has happened to.

I did not do the above because the instructions mentioned that it was not necessary. I'm willing to try the above. I may look into changing the input to 1.4 for Directv to see if that helps first before doing the power all off, restart. I'll check it tonight.

I have a similar issue (haven’t tried this update yet) that drops the center channel when surround sound modes change without proper flags. Like when HBO GO goes from the Dolby 2.0 episode recap into Dolby 5.1 of the main program, it doesn’t seem to be giving the proper notification, so the XMC-1 is remaining in 2.0 and not playing the center or surround channels. I talked with Lonnie Lonnie about it and he said they had noticed similar things on their end. I’m hoping this update addresses it, but haven’t had a chance to do the install yet.

Well, I’m not convinced they’re the same, as you’re stating that it happens whenever you power up. Mine only happens in very specific situations that I’ve been able to identify the cause.

I have mentioned this multiple times and was hoping that this new firmware would have addressed the issue. I don't believe I'm the only one this has happened to. If using the prescribed method of resetting the HDMI boards (memorized EDID) or setting your DirecTV's assigned input to the "HDMI 1.4" compatibility mode does not resolve your issue, I would recommend temporarily foregoing the "Video Always On" power mode and try using the "Lowest Power" mode to see if that helps. I had to stop using "Video Always On" because I would religiously lose audio when using HDMI ARC. The XMC-1's display responded to the signal, but there was no sound. The only way to regain audio was to reboot the XMC-1. Now, as much as I hate the long bootup time, I have switched over to using "Lowest Power" and haven't had a problem with HDMI ARC since. The problem with most DVRs and/or STBs is that they never fully power off and don't kill their own video output. They just send a black screen or display a screen saver. In these cases, it is possible that there isn't a new handshake (or maybe an incomplete handshake) taking place when the device "wakes up". Maybe this is also worth trying in your case...
