Guys, I am looking to replace my dual SVS PC12 Plus subs with something in a more conventional sub design (ie square box). My biggest reason for changing is that the PC-12s sit a little too tall and they block the screen to my projector a tad. This is in my theater room which is 12'W X 17'L, so not a huge room. I am debating going with dual 15" subs (Specifically the Monoprice Monolith 15", or maybe the S15 from Emotiva). I have never ran a sealed sub so I do not know what to expect from it versus the ported subs I have ran in the past. It is used maybe 70% movies, 30% two channel music. My current 12" subs preform well for my room, so I could just go back with 12" ones, but my thought is if I am changing any way might as go with bigger units unless there is some down side to them that I am not seeing. What are your general thoughts towards this. Budget wise I don't want to go too crazy, I don't mind being around $2300ish for a pair, as I think I can get around $1000 or so for my current subs.

If you aren't apposed to DIY, you can build custom cabinets to suit whatever height you need as long as you stay within the recommended sized cabinet for the driver you purchase. Sealed is sealed... no magic, no voodoo needed. You can easily build 2 or more subs within your price point including amp, DSP, etc. You can even purchase flatpacks to save time on cutting and fitting the panels together. Prior to my going DIY, I had a single HSU VTF-15h and it didn't pressurize my room enough... it sounded good, but I craved deeper bass for HT purposes. I replaced it with a single 18 and eventually went with a second 18 and I'm more than satisfied.
If you're not interested in goign DIY, then let us know what your height requirement is and we can provide suggestions. Not sure if asthetics is a concern, but if your current sub is taller than it is wide, you can try laying it on it's side.

BTW nice looking room. We're in the process of moving and my HT will be in a smaller room than what I have today... it will be 10'11" x 15'7" with 10" ceiling dedicated room. Looks like you have 3 seats across? Do you have any other pictures of the room?

Height wise I am good with up to about 30", so aside from the SVS sub I am okay there. Width wise 18" is about the most I think I can fit, so that basically kills going with any sub larger than a 15". I attached a pic of my media room for a reference point. I am not really looking to go the DIY route, I'm just lazy lol.

This picture of the rear is before I added the sound panels and changed out the rear speakers, but its gives you an idea of what it looks like. I have a three seat couch in the rear on a 5" riser I built. The front row is a two seat with a storage cubby in the middle of it for remotes etc. I do wish I had two more feet or so both in length and width, but overall I am happy with it being a track built home.

I'm not familiar with the Monoprice subs, but I'm sure you already know the usualy recommended subs... HSU, PSA and SVS. I purchased an Emotiva sub, small 10" I believe, for my dad a while back and he's happy with it, but it's not enough for me. My current room isn't dedicated, it opens to the rest of the house and my dual 18s are more than enough for HT, so no worries going sealed as long as you have enough cone mass and power to presurrize the room properly.

If I was going back to a “ready built” sub. I’d look at the jtr offerings or for a smaller footprint lower budget, Rythmik is my top pick. Haven’t heard the monolith subs... yet. But the hsu, svs and rythmik suns I have played with. The fv15 was the nicest sounding.

I have the Airmotiv S-12 and love it. I think 2 at the current lower price would be great. The 15s would be even better i’m sure.

+1 for Rythmik subs, for your needs I'd look at.... - L22 (sealed, dual 12" drivers @ 28 inches high) - about $1,650 for a pair (IMO, probably the most bang for the buck in their lineup)
- E15 / F15HP (sealed, 15" driver - the E is a smaller enclosure) - about $2,350 for a pair
- FVX15 (ported, 15" driver) - about $2,150 for a pair
- L12 (sealed, 12" driver) - about $1,025 for a pair
- LVX12 (ported, 12" driver) - about $1,500 for a pair
- LV12F (ported, 12" driver) - about $1,100 for a pair
- Prices based on discount for multiple sub purchase, and include shipping (subject to change, not responsible for inaccurate information )
I have a pair of the L22s in a sealed room about 14'x29' and they are plenty powerful and extremely tight and accurate. I'm mostly music/concert videos, but they're also great for movie soundtracks. If you really like more tactlile response and sub-bass for movies, then a ported might be a better choice. Shoot them an inquiry on their contact page ( Contact Us page) or a message on the AVS Rythmik forum ( AVS forum) and ask for their recommendation - they're very helpful, honest and usually very prompt. I have no affiliation with them... just a satisfied customer.

If and/or when my two SVS subs were to need replacing, I would be going the Power Sound Audio route. Power Sound Audio V1510 Design: Vented Driver: 15" High Excursion Powered: IcePower Amp 960W RMS (2100W PEAK) Enclosure: CNC machined MDF Frequency Response: 16Hz-200Hz +/-3dB In-Room Extension: 11Hz-14Hz Size (DxWxH): 24" x 17" x 25" Weight: 86 lbs www.powersoundaudio.com/products/V1510

Hey David, if you do look at SVS again, feel free to reach out to me. My buddy is an authorized dealer and he can save you some money. He deals in about a dozen different brands, SVS among them. He has a ton of satisfied customers and a great reputation. Nothing in it for me at all, just trying to hook you up to save some money.

Tim I am struggling with SVS to some extent as their prices seem to be rising relative to their competition. They started as a great value subwoofer, now I would almost argue that they are overpriced retaliative to the competition out there. If you look at their PB-4000 sub @$1899 (1200RMS 14" sub) and compare it to the Monoprice Monolith (1000RMS 15")@$1299 it is very hard to think of why go with the SVS. And that is not even looking at the HSU, Rythmik, etc of the world. Maybe the SVS has some value with their advance DSP, but it just seems like a big price jump compared to their competition.

I bought mine for use on a Music system - but you might still want to check-out GoldenEar Technology. One of our long-standing local HiFi shops turned me onto their ForceField series, which is REALLY hard to beat in the "bang-for-the-buck" department: - Reasonably compact / non-obtrusive appearance
- Purpose-Built Amplifier Boards designed specifically for Subwoofer duty (the Boards they use are "built like a TANK")
- Amp is "Over-Designed" so that it can deliver the pounding that is required of it over the long haul (Local dealer said that he virtually NEVER gets burned-out GE Amp Boards and he has been selling these for a few years.)
- Good adjustment features for crossover frequency and boost level
- Enclosure damped using specially designed passive radiator (tighter control than ported, IMHO) Downward-firing - couples to floor effectively
- Decent Warranty, but dealer assures me that, "you'll never need it"... (3 years on electronics / 5 years on other stuff)
www.goldenear.com/products/forcefield-subwoofers?gktab=3Right now, I just have the "baby" of the family - ForceField 3 and it " added a WHOLE 'nother level" of dimension / low-end "Grunt" to my system. I think that GoldenEar Technology has a very similar approach to what they do / how they do business to Emotiva If you think that you want MORE thump / MORE Dynamics / tighter control - you might also want to check-out their "Super-Sub" Series [SuperSub XXL is the "shock and awe" member of their family]
