Well this should be the end of the ski photos for this season, my wife and I went up to Tahoe for a few days and I completed my annual goal of 100 days, 1000 miles, 1 million vertical feet. Day 99 yesterday at Palisades … Day 100 today at Alpine Meadows … … and though not photography, the season’s stats

It's Nature Photography Day, and we have been watching the weather to get a morning at an amazing egret/heron rookery that has become very active over just the past few years. So we were out of the house at 4:15am and on the rail at the Ocean City, NJ Welcome Center by 6. And ... baby pterodactyls!!!

Two days into our trip in the Northwest Passage, Nunavut, CA aboard the Sylvia Earle. On the 11th we boarded in Resolute Bay and navigated east in Lancaster Sound with a 6ft swell and quite a bit of ice!

Expedition travel is called "expedition" for a reason ... no plan survives the whole journey, particularly in the Arctic and Antarctic. In our case, the plan was blown (literally) three days before we left. Winds had blown sea ice into several channels in the Northwest Passage region of Nunavut. The westbound voyage of the M/V Sylvia Earle from Greenland had been significantly affected, with ice preventing any exploration of Baffin Island and very likely preventing them from crossing west of Resolute Bay and continuing south to Cambridge Bay where the plan was to "turn around" passengers for the eastbound voyage back to Greenland August 11. Even if a window opened for the ship to reach Cambridge Bay, there was significant risk that the ice in the channels would prevent our eastbound travel. So the charter flight was diverted to Resolute Bay 500 miles north, and we successfully boarded there ... shuttling people and gear with zodiacs in moderate winds and swell. We left Resolute just in time and beat through a strong headwind, 6ft seas and closing sea ice all night into Lancaster Sound, entering the protection of Maxwell Bay in the early morning of the 12th. For the next several days Resolute was inaccessible, no flights were possible ... another ship - Quark Ultramarine - had to sit in Prince Regent Inlet a couple days before finally making it to Resolute, but were unable to disembark passengers due to cancelled flights. At the same time as all of this, wildfires threatened Yellowknife and all 22,000 residents were evacuated. Yellowknife is the only available refueling stop between Cambridge/Resolute and Calgary. Ultimately the Quark had to cancel their next voyage and had to transport passengers still on the Ultramarine to a location on Baffin to fly home. Meanwhile, some provisions meant for the Sylvia Earle were stuck in Cambridge Bay. We ran out of yogurt a couple days after leaving Resolute. Fortunately for us, we managed a late evening rendezvous with the Ultramarine in Prince Regent Inlet and they kindly shared some of their supply . We stayed in the Lancaster Sound and Prince Regent area for a few days, dodging ice and wind, making a couple landings and cruising the edges of the sea ice. We landed in the little town of Arctic Bay and received a warm welcome from many of the 900 residents. Our attempt to reach Beechey Island was foiled when winds in Lancaster Sound that had been predicted to be 30 with gusts to 50 ... ended up being 50 with gusts to 70, in 12-15ft swells .... back to Maxwell Bay! Pond Inlet eventually was free of ice, but when we arrived 50mph winds precluded zodiac operations for a landing. The crew very cautiously made one trip to shore to drop off our cultural consultant Mariah back to her home town so she could continue her journey back to grad school in Vancouver. Finally, after two very good days exploring eastern Baffin Island we crossed Baffin Bay to Greenland and our last four days were pretty much to plan. Unfortunately we failed to reach any of the historic sites of the Franklin Expedition, and having missed the more southern and western areas, wildlife sightings were sparse. But my expectations - this being my fifth polar expedition - were realistic: as long as I had good photography each day I was happy! And the Sylvia Earle is an excellent ship! Captain Artem, Expedition leader Susan, and the rest of the crew did an excellent job ... and the food and drink were pretty amazing! Some photos are here, with many more to come in the next month or so. marclombardi.zenfolio.com/p662750606

I love having the ability with these new phones to capture moments on the fly…… A few years ago, I got sick and tired of people sitting on their ass on the gym machines texting while I’m on a short period of time to work out and get back. No more frustration, I do floor exercises at home and I get my aerobic activity by being the park ranger ha ha just walking at my local park which is a beautiful place. Along with that goes the opportunity to grab some photographic moments.
Here’s one of a beautiful pair of woodpecker’s , who are kind enough to give me a pose lol.

We were pleasantly surprised at the lack of tourists, especially at Delicate Arch. Not too often you can get a photo op without a few hundred people swarming about! Quite a hike BTW
