First view out the side door this morning, enjoyed the ominous purple sky backing sunrise off the trees.

I took these in February 2006. Headed back to Antarctica after nearly 18 years. The journey starts tomorrow, boarding the Sylvia Earle in Ushuaia on the 29th for two weeks! ... Those are amazing photos Marc, hope you have a great time!

Don’t forget to post pictures of you doing the polar plunge when you get back.

This fits in the ‘All’ part of the thread name, that is, it’s an iPad screenshot from one of our security cameras (I did use the PTZ, for my photographer’s credit)

Enjoy Marc! The closest I can get to Antarctica is buying a North Face McMurdo parka. 😊

Enjoy Marc! The closest I can get to Antarctica is buying a North Face McMurdo parka. 😊 I bought one for my first trip in 2006 ... still have it, but a bit overkill for summer in Antarctica. This time temperatures were high 20's to low 30's .... i.e. a few days it was colder back in PA!

Back from Antarctica ... and it was an EPIC voyage! Starting through the 12,000+ files ... Usually I process a few pictures as I go through a trip and come home with 20 or 30 done. This time ... I did like, six. I was just focused on being there, shooting as much as possible ... and naps! So now my usual home process ... I'll skip around and process a few to get a feel for the methods and style that works for this trip, and then in a month or so I'll do a methodical sweep through each folder. So to start ... we were in Paradise Bay and stopped at Brown Station on December 3. In the Polar regions the sun is always at a low angle and this makes for interesting effects even in bright daylight. We all saw thus "sunbow" while zodiac cruising through the ice.

... We all saw thus "sunbow" while zodiac cruising through the ice.... We knew you'd bring back some beauties ... Stunning! (and welcome back) We get them in the mountains when the temp and humidity are right and call them Sundogs, and yes, always at 22º, though I now see there's a difference between a Sundog and a Halo. What is the difference between a sun dog and a 22 degree halo? "The difference between sundogs and halos is the preferential orientation of the ice crystals through which the light passes before reaching our eyes. If the hexagonal crystals are oriented with their flat faces horizontal, a sundog is observed. If the hexagonal crystals are randomly oriented, a halo is observed."

Your pictures make me feel like I’ve been nowhere yet lol what’s the story with that Shackleton like ship in one of those pictures?

Alaska is epic also, and I guess that's where my journey started ... Alaska in '96 and again in 2000; then Galapagos 2004 where the trip leader talked me into Antarctica ... and then, I had to go back and since then I've been to Alaska two more times and this is my third trip back to the Southern Ocean. And in between ... Central America, India, Japan ... and Arctic Canada, Greenland and Svalbard. While in South Georgia we visited Shackleton's grave, walked the last four miles of his traverse from Fortuna Bay to Stromness, and visited his landing sites at Cave Cove and Pegotty Bluff. Traveling to the ends of the Earth ... there's a perspective you can't get any other way. It's not just about going there, but you have to take the time to let your mind see and BE there. Here are a couple more I worked on today ...

We had 2-4 meter seas crossing the Drake Passage each way, and that is relatively calm for the Drake. But for the 8 days we spent in the inner passages of the Peninsula our Expedition Leader Flo DeKuyper chose locations to keep us out of the wind so that we could do a zodiac cruise or landing twice a day. So yes it was mostly this calm, or some small swells ... little wind. The ice also keeps the swells down and there was ice in most of the bays.

Here are a couple more I worked on today ... View AttachmentView AttachmentView AttachmentView AttachmentView AttachmentI hear what you’re saying about the experience! Went whale watching while we’re up in Alaska but no luck batted 1000 and then it got really rough out there (I got yelled at by the captain) or I should say politely warned because I was out on the bow and it was just too rough. They didn’t want to go looking for me later… Rough enough that we had to turn back and we got a refund on that excursion and a bonus. We were taken to a park where we could hike up to a glacier, that was a great time of reflection until I saw the sign that said, if you see a moose… RUN. No issues, but kept a watchful eye for them and the Bears. The blue ice of those Glaciers is very dramatic.…… And warned about walking too close since they are constantly moving. We spent a day on Holland Americas, McKinley Xpress in the bubble observation car, that travels through the heart of Alaska that was terrific.
