May not be exciting. It brings me joy as my tree of hope. I just love this tree. Where I live.

A beautiful day. No rain for a change. My D800 gets to go outside. Got used to my Sony's and Canon, so it is new once again being a Nikon dude.

405x5 leonski shifting photo discussion over here. When I switched from Canon to Sony I used Canon lenses with a Metabones adapter at first, and then third party lenses like the Zeiss 18mm f/2.8 and Voigtlander 10mm f/5.6 Hyper Wide Heliar ... the wide Canons were 16-35mm f/2.8 and 8-15mm f/4 Circular Fisheye. As time went on I got the Sony 16-35 and then sold that and I sold the 10mm Voigtlander ... got the 12-24mm f/2.8 that I have now. And I now also have a Sigma 14mm f/1.4 that will be my astrophotography lens if I ever get somewhere dark and clear enough. But a lot of wide shots that you see are panoramas - nearly all HDR - and many taken hand held if it was not practical to be on a tripod ... such as in the airplane or on a ship in the Arctic or Antarctic. Laowa announced a 10mm f/2.8 rectilinear and I have a preorder in for that but it hasn't shipped yet. BTW the wide aerial shot of the Alaska range is four-wide HDR. I've moved all the photography to Smugmug, and the most recent stuff is Antarctica, Northwest Passage and Japan from last year. A lot of the panoramas were shot with vertical orientation with a 24-70 at various focal lengths, HDR, hand-held, and sometimes 4 to 6 frames wide. marclombardi.smugmug.com/

A very interesting thing happened at church. My Canon 1DX said not going to work for you today. Well, I had my Sonys with me just in case. Service was captured as planned. If you powered on the camera, 30 seconds later turns off. Found out that if I leave the battery out and turn on the camera and hold down the shutter release, it purges anything in any capacitors and so on. Reinsert the battery and wiped all settings back to factory default, and so far so good. Evaluating at this time. So far so good. Camera has latest firmware inside. This camera is no longer supported by Canon. No parts, but 3rd party evidently does. I am hoping I don't have to find out. I am enjoying the Nikon D700 and D800 also bought used. I never buy new. Yeah, I'm cheap okay? I seem to enjoy event photography the most though airplane chasing and such have an allure for me too. Might post being under a 737 not any higher than say 300 feet on final to KBNA. Fun stuff.

Okay, no photos just yet ... but, here's the plan ... 1100 miles by car, then 7hrs by ferry, then 565 more miles by car ... to get to the gannet colony at Cape Saint Mary's Newfoundland. Then a more leisurely 13 days backtracking and photographing landscapes, as well as puffins up north at Bonavista. Rented 600mm f/4 is all set to go! Also hoping to finally use the 14mm f/1.4 for night sky photos. Freshly wrapped in a nice metallic blue

That sunset is GORGEOUS! The story with the chairs is in 2011 someone in Gros Morne National Park got the idea to put pairs at lesser known viewpoints, then they had a contest to see who could find the 18 locations (prize was a pair of chairs). Now Parks Canada has placed over 100 pairs of chairs ... we saw several on our trip. Really had to chase that sunset! Never been to that spot and the sun was going down and we were racing up the trail looking for compositions. The backlit dandelions saved the shot. And BTW ... for anyone interested in visiting Newfoundland ... this is a BIG island with very diverse landscapes and culture. 20% bigger than Maine and 10% bigger than Iceland. Lots of the lower central area is inaccessible by road, and most especially ... there is no east-west road across the southern coast. To get from the southwest tip to the southeast tip was a 10hr, 550 mile drive.

This relates to our hobby too. There are "paleonostalgic" folks who long for the days of film. Well ... shoot this scene with Fuji Velvia 50 and what would you have? DxO Photolab, Lightroom and Photoshop saved the day.

I love spontaneity… I walk/hike about 4 1/2 miles or so; skip two days and then do the whole thing again.
On this mission I caught up with two woodpeckers who were having lunch lol simply shot with my phone in the right place at the right time. ……. and one of our indigenous snapping turtles, displaced by runoff from one of the thunderstorms.

…… A few more shots from the same place (FDR park in Northern Westchester)
On this particular day, there was a small fleet of helicopters picking up water, to drop on a fire someplace nearby and happened to be (Of course) I was in the middle of my walk there, with those chopper sounds in tow.

Where is this? Are they pileated? They are I believe…. That’s roughly 50 miles north of lower Manhattan in the FDR park just off the Taconic State Parkway. It’s amazing what can be done with a photograph. Just walking normally now where they were you can’t believe looking at that rotted tree stump that it could’ve been the framing point for such a nice picture, but that’s what happens. The area is loaded with them (and the little guys too!) Including my own backyard and I also have a incredible Hawknest in a tree above The back of my house. It’s been there for a few years. The squirrels and rabbits are constantly running for cover.

Photography for more than photography. Happywhale is cool! It was started by Ted Cheeseman whose company we have traveled with many times. I was the first to identify humpback HW-MN0103889 in Witless Bay, Newfoundland on June 15 (upper right blue square). It was then spotted farther south on July 20 and back up near the original location on July 25. I really hope someone spots it when it migrates for the winter! I also have 4-5 that I identified in Antarctica.
