After limited viewing , the short answer is they're real, and their spectacular Jerry! DV. Awesome blacks. Brights are clean. Bilbo's. Birthday looks incredible . No atmos, Bass is deep and clean, not gimped like most 4k discs. Erm, there most definitely and absolutely is an English language Dolby Atmos track on both the Hobbit / LOTR UHD released this week! EDIT - I think we are cross discussing both LOTR and Harry Potter specs and confusing a couple of us! Harry Potter UHD is a mighty fine DTS:X and Hobbit/LOTR is Atmos Audio and video are amazing! I watched part 2 of The Hobbit - Desolation of Smaug, today and the 23.976p conversion looks great (It was filmed in 48Hz HFR but in cinema previews most seemed to hate the super smooth flow of it and thought it was soap opera effect when it was technically better BUT ruined the trick that our eyes/brain use to perceive 23-30fps as fluid motion) |

I received my "LOTR" and "Hobbit" pre-orders yesterday. I didn't get the chance to open them until this morning, but did take a few minutes to watch some of "The Fellowship of the Ring". Wow... Just WOW... This is what all 4K restoration work should be measured up to. No shortcuts taken and no "downrezzing" of the 4K master to 2K to mix in the CGI. They did the opposite by uprezzing the CGI to 4K...!!! If you are a LOTR fan and have a 4K display, these are a "must own". They're superb...  Definitely reference quality video and audio-wise. |

I only have 7.1 so I couldn't comment on it. Guess I didn't make that clear. |

I just got it in. My first time watching the extended editions. They are SUPERB. Video quality is really very good. And a special note for the audio. Wow! Huge, warm sounding. Standard motion seemed ok, but anything with a lot of motion seemed sped up to me; like it was on FF during the scene. |

Definitely reference quality video and audio-wise. Are these just the movies or do they include the bonus features that were in the previous editions? It’s both the Extended and Theatrical versions, no bonus feature discs. |

The 1080p Blu-ray box-sets are still the best source for all of that! (I have never watched any movie's documentary or making of as I don't care where it comes from. The finished product either speaks to me and tells me everything or it doesn't in my view)
Bonus features are yet to be released in a future shameless octuple-dip (Actually, I've lost count!) of LOTR discs!
Even before this current set of UHD discs came out, they had announced the ultimate collection box set including the special features to be released in the middle of next year!

Warner Bros. is also announcing that in the summer of 2021 it will be releasing a 4K ULTIMATE COLLECTORS’ EDITION with theatrical and extended versions of ALL SIX of the remastered films and new bonus content. Additionally, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first The Lord of the Rings film, a newly remastered Blu-ray trilogy of The Lord of the Rings films will be available in the Fall of 2021, also including the theatrical and extended versions.

I think I'll sit this release out. If I re-buy a film (or series of films) I would want to sell the previous version to recoup some of the cost of the newest version. Without the special features I feel the need to keep the previous versions.
