Awesome, really glad to see this coming along. I think this is going to be a killer product. My brother, for example, is really excited to add this to his Squeezebox setup, and it would totally obviate the need for a pre-amp (all his sources are digital), which would save him some money. Squeezebox plus XDR-1 plus AV123 X-Amps? < $1000 all-digital 150wpc system with amazing sound quality...

Lonnie, If all my playback is via an iMac (uncompressed files), could I come out of this DAC and straight into say a UPA-2, or would I have to go through a pre-amp or receiver first? If anyone else knows the answer, don't be shy

If anyone else knows the answer, don't be shy You shouldn't have any problem at all. Not only is there a volume control on the XDA-1, you also have volume control on the iMac. And there's no use in having a volume control on a dac unless its to go strait to an amp Edit: Here's a quote from Lonnie from page 2 When you say volume control will this be a full featured DAC/Pre? Yes, it would have a digital volume control so it could be used as a stand-a-lone piece. Just connect a digital source into the unit and the outputs to an amp and your good to go. ;D

Lonnie,
Will the DAC have in-built protection like your amps, so it can be plugged straight into the wall?

Lonnie Two questions. I have my PC that I built that I want to use the digital coax out for my flac files. I need to go 25' to the DAC. The DAC will go to the UMC-1 I only have one subwoofer connected to the SUB OUT on the UMC-1 You could just use USB to get it 25'. You'd need to have one HUB in the middle, but it should work just fine.

Wednesday afternoon I stopped into EmoTEEva as a rest stop during my business trip to Huntsville, AL. The visit was unannounced but I was treated like family by Dan and Vincent. I spent about 1 1/2 hours with Vincent split listening to the ERC, USP, XPA2, and 8.3s in the stereo room and the Theater room with the UMC-1 setup. The DAC mule was in the theater room with its top off and although I did not get an opportunity to audition it I am excited for its arrival. I bought a Fubar II last year and ripped over 400 CDs to my PC. My old Sony CDP was ancient and the Fubar II was night and day (sorry for the overused description) improvement over the old Sony carousel player's DAC. I did not do any critical listening but everything I heard sounded top notch. I did get to see and hear the EMO subs in action in the theater room. The stop was a perfect rest after 7 hours of driving from Ohio. I only had about 90 minutes of drive left after I left Emotiva. When my old Pioneer Elite AVR, used as pre pro, died last fall I replaced it with a Yamaha 665 and USP-1 (first EMO piece). I was on the UMC-1 pre order list but I will probably pass and watch for the DAC to upgrade the Fubar II and watch for the XMC arrival. I was impressed with what I saw on the UMC-1. Once the wrinkles are ironed out it will be a market leader.
Thank you Dan and Vincent for your hospitality. Lonnie, Sorry I did not get to meet you but keep up the good work.
Ray

Very excited for this product,
Have a question though... Any chance of a DAC/Integrated Amp like Peachtree Decco/Nova??? Personally this would solve two problems for me, space and money.

They announced in today's webcast emotiva.com/webcast040210/webcast.shtm (section 2 of the webcast) that the new physical design on the DAC means it won't be released for another 90 days or so. So at this point, the DAC should be available sometime this July.

I listened to the podcast yesterday and was intrigued with the discussion of the XDA-1. From reading the first post in this thread Lonnie says the DAC in the XDA-1 is very similar to what is in the ERC-1. When Lonnie and Dan were discussing the performance of the XDA-1 which was using a ERC-1 (digital out) to the XDA-1 then straight to a XPA-2 using the XDA-1s volume control.
Their comments were that the SQ was amazing and much better overall than the ERC-1 when a direct comparison was made earlier with a preamp. The terms "scary" and "frightening" were used to describe the imaging and that it was a "night and day difference" when compared to the ERC-1s performance.
What I am curious about is how does the XDA-1 with similar a DAC (better, equal or less in quality?) as in the ERC-1 accomplish the huge difference in SQ?
When the XDA-1 is available I would definitley like to try it in my system. But I would appreciate it if Lonnie could provide a little information as to how the XDA-1 performs so much better than the ERC-1 on its own.

Implementation. As had been said many times in this forum, a DAC is just a chip. It's how you use it that matters.

Well maybe you or Lonnie could elaborate on the implemation or the use of the DAC of the XDA-1 in comparison to the ERC-1. Which might explain how it performs that much better than the implemation of the similar DAC in the ERC-1. To be honest I am not the most technical saavy person so maybe an explanation again by yourself or Lonnie would benefit myself and others not as knowledgable that are interested in the XDA-1. Bill

I am not that DAC savvy, but also realize that the whole implementation is usually rate limiting to quality, not the chip. Thats why some specs give the chip S/N (etc) specs and the full in/out S/N ratios (etc). RE: "XDA-1s volume control"If the ERC-1 -> XDA-1 then used the XDA-1 volume control, shouldn't any improvements be truncated (with a digital volume control) as you decrease volume from maximum in the XDA-1 DAC? Thanks for the more DAC savvy forum users (or Emotiva staff) for any comments and enlightenment. Like Bill, I am waiting to buy this but would like this clarified. Mike
