I am in the market for a turntable, and was thinking why doesnt Emo make a table? So I thought maybe others would be interested too. Give your vote, would you be interested in a table from Emo, or do most of you think analog is dead.

Transferred my whole record collection onto digital. Freed up a lot of storage after I sold off my record collection.

I often wondered why the Asian manufacturers aren't more active in building new turntables? Except for maybe a few tonearms and cartridges, I can't think off the top of my head of any Asian designed/built turntables with the obvious exception of the SL-1200 and clones.
It's odd that turntables are the province of American and European manufacturers. Maybe vinyl was less available in Asian and especially communist (China) countries and they don't have the legacy?
Anyway, I think there is an opportunity for a really "kick-ass" turntable design maybe under $1k designed in US/Europe but built in the East. Some of the cheap Project/Rega clones have really atrocious build quality. I've owned a number of them and I almost had to rebuild them to get them working at their optimum. What really bugs me is worst than lamp cord captive cables with crappy rca plugs that really contribute to rf and hum noise. I just think it is the wrong place to cut corners when dealing with the low voltage signal of a phono system.
By contrast, I also have an inexpensive ($175) Audio Technica SL1200 clone that is built like a tank. It really is a great turntable if you are careful with setup and is really quiet and speed stable. I use it to do digital captures of my out of print LPs. Combined with software tweaks, I am able to rival CDs in terms of dynamic range and quietness. I also use a VPI 16.5 record cleaning machine which makes a huge difference.

When I was first in the market for a turntable, I was thinking the same thing. While I think it would be great if Emotiva made turntables, it's kind of like asking a car company to start making tires or batteries. It's certainly related to what they manufacture, but it's not where their expertise lies. What they do, they do very well, but analog is very different from what they do.
The top turntable manufacturers are different names than the top audio manufacturers because their specialty is so different. All that said, I don't think Emotiva should make a turntable, at least with what they're currently focusing on. Now, if they want to do to the turntable market what they did to the speaker market, go right ahead! I'd be very interested if they decided to make a line of turntables and jumped into that market, but they would have to invest a lot of their energy into developing it, and I question whether they would want to do that. They might be spreading themselves too thin.

I think the market they would enter is already saturated with good products. Pro-ject, Rega, Music Hall, etc., all make very good turntables in all price ranges.

The market for turntables is very small and specialized, and available software (new vinyl) is hard to find and usually not mainstream titles. I do not think it would be a very wise business decision to enter the turntable market.

When I was at Emofest, Lonnie Vaughn was talking about a turntable that he wants to design and sell at Emotiva. Looks very interesting. Possible linear tracker with belt drive. Stay tuned, you never know. This looks to be very enticing if it happens especially in light of the phono stages already in the USP-1 and the upcoming XSP-1. "It is logical Captain." ;D

Ok dyohn is right but that was an early prototype. There is going to be more black anodized aluminum and soft blue lights on it. No seriously I saw this old !#$%&* turntable Lonnie was showing in his lab, and this might give him the inspiration for his design. "All systems are go, all lights are blue....in this case." ;D

I also talked w/Lonnie about his ideas for a turntable at Emofest. It sounded like a low priority, but he shared some interesting thoughts on a design he was interested in. He did say that parts of it built on things they'd developed for others years ago, but he added that one build was a contact-less drive system. Basically, electromagnets would pulse to push the platter around. Net, no belt, no motor to direct drive the platter, just pulses of electricity.
As an engineer myself, this quite intrigued me as the use of fields is a natural technology evolution. But I do love my old Thorens 166. Its sound is great and there a lot of great memories in that old table. But, I could use a new cartridge...maybe with a blue light glowing within it...

An EmoTable is an interesting idea and I think they should do. My only issue with turntables is the price of new vinyl. I can buy 2 new cd's for the price of one new record.

I actually own two turntables at the moment. Heck, my avatar is a cartridge. Besides the table in my signature, I also have a nice Luxman. While I'm a fan of vinyl, I wouldn't be interested in an Emotiva turntable. I'd rather go with a well established turntable company, and I suspect many other vinyl fans would feel the same way.

But remember this is just talk and a low priority. There is no official word so just count this as vaporware. Those needing a table now have no reason to wait. Lots of great tables now you can get.
