I'm contemplating several ED subs, but am torn. It seems the sealed subs are more musical and the ported are more prodigious in the output level, yet not as musical.
Thoughts ?

PS. Thanks to the ERC-1, I am now 50/50 HT and Music, where before it was 75/25 HT.

I own both designs. The sealed subs seem easier to place as there is no port to consider - they seem to play better in tight corners than ported subs do. My main HT sub is the eD A5-350 ported 15". It plays with great detail with music and plays lower than my 2 DIY 12" sealed subs each of which are powered with one channel of a Behringer EP1500. I use all three for HT but usually just the 2 12" subs for music.
While it used to be thought (maybe rightfully so at one time) that ported subs weren't as musical as sealed subs it isn't necessarily true any more. Advances in drivers - amps - ports - and crossovers have made ported subs just as good. A sealed sub will usually require more power to attain the same SPL as a ported sub. A lot also depends on the driver efficiency as well.

Personally, I have never liked ANY ported subs. THey are designed for more output. But as they play louder and have more wattage pumped through them they start to get sloppy and have "overhang" issues. I always recommend sealed subwoofers. Regardless of its for music or HT. If you need more output, then add another identical sealed sub in line to increase output levels. I myself own a pair of ED subs, the A5S-300's. I use them in my workout room with a pair of Magnepan MC1's. I get plenty of clean output with low frequency extension just below 20hz.

I would choose a sub on its individual performance rather than whether it is ported or sealed. These day there are outstanding subs from both designs.

Not that I know a ton, but claiming that all ported subs are sloppy... hmmm I think some folks from SVS, HSU, Epik, Velodyne and MANY, MANY other fine sub manufactures might want to argue.

I've heard and loved both...but yesterday, I messed with the 10" Ultra sub for a while, and, man...you could distinguish every note of the bass. Wasn't just low end 'mush'...

Ported sub designs in general only have one advantage over a sealed enclosure: SPL. Sealed sub designs have a number of advantages over ported designs: Sound clarity, smoother frequency response, and much more linear response in terms of output WITHOUT "overhang" and fast rise distortion near max spl, nor is port noise an issue with sealed setups. Plus a sealed box will normally be half the size of a similiar ported/vented box design using the same driver/amp combo. Want the best of both worlds for HT and music? Go with sealed, or multiple sealed subs if you need more output. Its a no brainer.

All ported subs get sloppy when they near their max spl potential. I have never liked a ported subwoofer when its pushed hard. Yep, I know companies make alot of ported subs. People for HT want BOOM, and SPL. I personally like boom and SPL myself when Im watching a movie. But I get it with multiple sealed sub arrangements. All those comapnies do make ported subs, alot of them make sealed sub counterparts too both of which I am familiar with, and the sealed counter parts are much better sounding subs. Take Epik for one. Their best sounding sub without question is the Phoenix. It doesnt have quite the same overall output as some of their ported offerings, but its frequency extension down low is literally ruler flat and it still can put out some serious SPL when driven hard. No port noise or overhang at loud SPL levels, it sounds clean right up to the amps clean max RMS output and well beyond even.

Subs do not get "sloppy." That's physically impossible. What most people call "sloppy" is usually either high distortion or group delay characteristics when a system is either pushed too hard or set up incorrectly.

Subs do not get "sloppy." I used to have a girlfriend who was sloppy (she was ported).

Dann... what is the 10 Ultra? An Emotiva sub? Ported or Sealed? The Ultra 10 and 12 are coming up the first quarter of next year. Both front firing, sealed subs. Plug and play, basic stuff, but great sounding. The 10" is 300 watts, the 12" is 500. They are both TIGHT and very musical.
