hey Lonnie, one more question. Is it ok to leave the USB connected to the rear of the UMC after the update? It would surely make life a bit easier for future updates so im not moving the rack back and forth

I have a 64 bit windows vista system. I have sucessfully downloaded the 64 bit extractor, and the emotiva software upgrades. I can get the emotiva AVR upgrade program to run, but I'm getting the red "X" on the line connecting the computer to the UMC as shown in step 10. I am using a 16 ft cable. Any ideas?

Here's a suggestion from an interested third party (me) who is just trying to help:
For those running Windows 7 and having trouble getting it to work at all, try right-clicking on the installer and selecting "Run as administrator". It sounds like this installs some USB driver(s) and that can sometimes help.
Also, a really good alternative to 7-zip and WinRAR is my favorite: IZarc (http://www.izarc.org/)

Hi All, I leave the USB cable attached to the back of my UMC-1 so that I can grab it quickly and update SW at home. I've updated my UMC-1 on both Vista and Windows 7 without incident. You must follow the instructions exactly, and do not have anything else operating in the background, please. Even an email coming in can cause timing errors. I'm not a computer expert and I do the update in 5-10 minutes. We do it all of the time here and we have beta testers doing also, so it can be done! Again, if you have a problem, we will take care of if for you. We'll issue shipping doc's and pay freight both ways. Also re: EmoQ. In my rooms here and at home it just works. Mic placement is important and also remember EmoQ can be tricked by weird reflections, standing waves, nulls, etc. It does not replace your judgment and common sense. All in all, it works quite nicely, but you may need to adjust your measuring position of you are getting weird results. Please don't automatically think it's junk because you got a bad reading. Everyone please stay calm and everything will sort itself out nicely. We're not going to leave any of you spinning in the wind. Thanks, Big Dan

Lonnie, don't be discouraged. This, too, will pass. Thanks for all your hard work to bring us what I'm confident will turn out to be a very capable pre/pro at an unbelievable price. Do hope there will be a way for Mac users to apply the updates without borrowing a PC. Can you run XP on your Mac, Jim? Just saw this, Dann. I could under boot camp or Parallels Desktop, but it requires a commercial disk of XP service pack 2 or 3 (not OEM, not an upgrade.) I don't have the OS and don't want to waste more $ on microsoft stuff that just doesn't work. Guess if I can't find someone with an old MS laptop I'll just have to send it in.

Well, each time I run Emo-Q I get much different results. It always wants to set the fronts to 250 and it always sets the sub x-over high (over 100). It also wants to push the trim of the sub up t max. Not really sure what is going on here. I just set the speaker trim with my trust RatShack Meter and the trims are definately different than any of the Emo-Q trims I'm getting.

Not a dig on anybody....but How is that Emotiva is seemingly doing the FW at their place with much better luck..?? Is it possible that the procedure is dependent on the exact same setting that their PC's are using?? It's also possible that most people have no problems and aren't here telling us about it because they are having fun instead

Ok. I've still got problems with this updater. From what I gather, there is no 64 bit version of the updater. You were simply saying to use winrar 64 bit? correct? I really don't see what the difference would be since winrar 32bit should run the same in win 7 64, though slightly slower, perhaps. In either case it's a non-issue since I had winrar 64bit installed long before the umc was even released. Everything works fine until I hit step 6. My computer simply will not except this driver. First it would get stuck trying to load the usbexpress device driver. I found a usb to ps2 adapter and was finally able to get past the locked usb using cntrl+shift+ esc and ctrl+alt+del. I click on the box that says install driver anyway and it does, but windows still does not recognize this device. In the device manager it shows the usbexpress device with a yellow exclamation point. when I click on properties it gives me a paragraph or so under device status about an improper digital signature and ends with Code 52. I have tried numerous ways to correct this. uninstalling reinstalling, safe mode, bypassing the updaters automatic driver install and going with exe under the driver folder (which doesn't require me to hit ctrl shift esc, etc to get to work for those that might be interested), update driver in device manager and point at the x64 directory for the drivers (it tells me the best ones are already installed or it can't find any.) I downloaded XP virtual machine only to find out that my computer's hardware doesn't support it and Microsoft, in all of their infinite wisdom, provides nothing but vague clues as to what "hardware" my computer is missing to get it to work. I'm down to about two options. 1.) Move my entire vista desktop within range of the usb cable 2.) or unhook the umc and take it to the vista machine. Neither one is appealing. I might have one other option where I can use my router as a middle man, but I've never had much luck getting that to work before. Any other thoughts on what I might be missing? Are you doing the driver install with the desktop or another unit? I ask because the instructions state to have the USB hooked up before doing the install of the drivers. Your message indicates that you do not have the UMC connected to your desktop. If this is the unit you are using I assume this would cause issues. BTW, I would move the umc to the PC but depending on your set up either one might involve as much work.

FWIW, I just ran the update from a 32 bit Vista laptop and had no problems. The only confusing part is in step 17 it says "you will get a message when the update succeeds." Really all that happens is the progress bar reaches 100% and there is a small message in a field on the bottom that says download complete but it's not totally clear that that means the full update is done. I let it sit for 15 minutes to make sure it wasn't doing anything else. From the instructions I expected a pop up stating update complete.
Yes, that sounds dumb and nitpicky, but with all the problems people are having, I wanted to make absolutely sure.
P.S. - I can also confirm the screwed up inputs.. the names are whacked out and they've scrambled positions.

I liked it as well, but we got so many complaints about it (probably because it was a misunderstanding of what was happening) that we took it out. I will certianly look into adding it to the menu for a later rev. That's great Lonnie, I hope you guys add it again. Would it be possible to have both? True stereo (2 Ch) and all channel stereo as an option? Anything is possible. ;D

If its a serial communications protocol that you care to share I could probably write something that would work for a Unix based system (Mac / Linux) - no promises but I'd be willing to guinea pig it on my system (when it show up ). I believe I saw another response in this thread offering programming help as well. I can completely understand if you want to keep it all in house - but sometimes a little open-source help .... well helps! Brian I'm not proud. ;D If you can write it, I am certainly willing to take a look at it.
