I was at EMOFEST and was amazed at the power and sound of these new subs! I bought the X-Ref 12. I have no doubt that it will do my system justice not to mention that I got it at EMOFEST for $499 ( discounted show price plus $50 in emo-bucks in the emo swagger bag) Great two days, can't wait till next year! I got the 12 and plan on running REW sweeps of the Ultra before I move it and then of the X-REF in the exact same position. Excellent purchase man!! They sounded great when I was watching Transformers

It will be nice to see some actual measurements. I would expect that the X-Ref would be slightly better. Well, I had some sweeps to show but REW locked up on me after I had already run them and had the subs in their final positions. So I can't show the comparison graph that I had hoped to (and I know I should save things at regular intervals). I can say that the X-Ref12 has 2 to 3db more output beginning at 30Hz downward as compared with the Ultra 12. That was with the X-REF set flat with no adjustments to the PEQs. I then added 3db at 25Hz with a 5.0 Q and verified the corresponding increase below 30 in the resulting sweep. It worked exactly as I expected. I plan to spend more time today evaluating but I am very impressed with the sound early on. This thing is tight, well controlled, has good extension and lots of output. Needless to say it stomps my Polk DSW PRO 500 (getting retired) but I was also pleased to see how well it integrated with the Ultra 12.

I quickly hooked up my X-Ref 12 as a "behind the couch" kicker and ohhhhh man!!!!! I got it mainly for music, to be placed up front, but after playing with it placed behind the couch, I don't think I want to move it! I am on a concrete slab, so I never get any floor rumble, but having it right behind the couch sure wakes you up and makes it all come alive. Just gong to have to give in and get another one for up front. Darn! ;-)

Just one thing, why does everything I put on it always bounce around then fall off?"

I took the plunge and got a pair of the x-ref 12s, mostly for music. I was going to wait for the 15s next year but I (quite selfishly ) did not want to wait. I heard the 12s extensively at the Emofest (mostly for movies but some music). I liked what I heard and I was impressed with the specs. I should also add that Dan put on one hell of a impromptu demo / seminar talking about the two new subs. There others that were in attendance (quite a few of us in a small room) would attest, methinks. Dan is very passionate yet remains persuasive in the process of talking about his work. I can't wait to receive them and dial them in this weekend. I will keep you all posted. I quickly hooked up my X-Ref 12 as a "behind the couch" kicker and ohhhhh man!!!!! Hello,
I'm French and I got my X-REF 12 yesterday. I need your help.
I Have some questions:
- There Was No trigger cable in the box, is this normal?
- Which trigger output of the UMC-1 I need to connect the X-REF 12 Knowing That the XPA-5 Is The AMP1 output?
- Do I need the cable if I trigger the home cinema?
- For home theater use, I choose the setting with X-OVER DIRECT MOVIE mode. Have I done?
- What is the "center frequency" and the "Q"?
- Is there a manual more detailed than the "quick guide" provided with?
Thank you in advance for your answers.
Hervé.

There was no trigger cable with mine, either. You should be able to use any of the unused trigger outs. Just make sure you turn on the appropriate trigger(s) in the UMC-1's input setup. Don't understand Q#3. But the cable is only needed if you want the movie mode on the XREF activated by the UMC with certain sources. X-over direct is if you have the UMC doing the bass management. Otherwise you can set the subs crossover wherever you want on the sub itself. Center frequency is the frequency you will be altering with the parametric EQ of the XREF. Q is how wide an area of the frequency band is affected. The higher the number, the narrower the band. I called about a manual. Cathy told me they would be ready in a week or so.

Thank you for your answers.
For question 3, I wanted to know if doing only the home theater, I needed to connect the trigger? For now, the X-REF 12 lights along my UMC-1 and goes to sleep about 15 minutes after turning off the UMC-1.
How do I know if I'm on the EQ EQ1 or 2?
Thank you in advance for your help.

For Question 3, I specify that I need X-REF 12 on all my sources.

You can manually select movie mode on the XREF and should stay there until you un-select it. EQ1 and EQ2 are always active if set to something other than zero. You can select one or two different frequency bands to adjust if necessary.

BTW, Lonnie just informed me the "movie" mode adds a 6db boost at 45Hz "for that kick in the chest bass when watching a movie". Just in case anyone is wondering...
Thanks, Lonnie.

Best Subs for under $600.? HSU VTF1 $445. or VTF 2 $575 Epik Legend $560 Rythmik FV12 $560. Elemental Design A3-250 $450 or A2-300 $415. Emotiva Ultra 12 $429. or X-Ref 10 $449. Lookig for actual people who have heard or used these subs And I do respect/prefer a sub with a smaller footprint
