I just tried this method for the first time (first FW update on the UMC-1 period) and it worked wonderfully, not a single issue.
I downloaded the files and loader from emonatics and then followed this procedure.
Time to hook it back up and start playing with my settings again, thanks!

Thank you for doing this...i tried the posted procedure first, and it took 4 tries to get the install to complete without timing out. In spite of completing "successfully" using that method, the unit was completely FUBAR. I saw this and gave it a try, and it worked perfectly. Fixed serious HDMI handshake issues, restored EMOQ so that it consistently and accurately nails the speaker distances and phase, and restored the ridiculous weak bass signal the UMC was putting out previously.

Excellent - Finally flash it to the latest firmware.
Thank you so much for the work around. ;D
I will do more testing on it and see what's new with the latest firmware.
Once again thank you very much for sharing the alternative method for flashing the firmware.

This part is rather important...power off the unit on the front after it completes...then off at the back once the front turns amber..this takes a few seconds...
4) Unit should have amber lights. Now push the pwr button or use remote. Now the UMC will load and start to do Step 2 Write and Step 3 Verify. Progress can be monitored on the front panel display. Once you get the "Complete!" message then power off the unit and turn it off-then-on from the back panel.
That said when i did it the first time I just switched it off at the back...now its stuck in a write verify loop...so might have to start again.
Edit...managed to get it all back and running again, now on v19 again.

The exact thing happened to me when I tried the new way and I spent the better part of a day getting things loaded, eventually via the "old way". I just cut and pasted your power sequence tip into my notes for "the next time"!

Ok, I've held off for many months on updating my FW and am questioning whether or not I should try it. My UMC-1 shipped with FW 7.04.00.10. At that time, it was said that there was a "Final" FW version that would be released soon (which it did) but I haven't kept up to see whether or not it is the latest version or if others have been released even after that. Is there a place in the forums that lists the versions? Do I have the next to the latest FW version? Do you think I should try to update it to the latest version?

Well, there are 2 ways to look at this. If you're happy with the current version on your UMC-1 and haven't experienced any of the issues reported and fixed in the latest version, then stay on the current version. OTOH, several improvements were made to the SQ in the latest version so it may pay to update the firmware. Using the alternative method detailed in this thread works. I did 2 units that way. Ultimately it's your decision but If I were you I would definitely update.

Many (including me) like to do a factory reset before and/or after the update. I'll be a lot easier to restore your settings if you have a record of them. Also don't forget to run EmoQ afterwards.

Many (including me) like to do a factory reset before and/or after the update. I'll be a lot easier to restore your settings if you have a record of them. Also don't forget to run EmoQ afterwards. Emotiva has made it easy for you to document all of your settings. They have created a spreadsheet template for you to record all of your settings before you run your FW update. Just click on the link below to print the spreadsheet. Good luck with your upgrade. emotiva.com/resources/media/umc1/settings_printout.pdfOh, I almost forgot to mention that Emotiva will perform the FW upgrade, free of charge, if you find the task too daunting. Just call in for an RMA# to have the latest FW installed and to bench test the UMC-1 to ensure all systems are working properly. You will only need to pay the shipping to return the unit to Emotiva. The return shipping is on Emotiva. Some people who only have Apple computers have used this service and report that Emotiva very quickly turns the upgrade around, usually in-house only one day. If you are computer literate, have an IBM compatible PC, and can follow directions you should have no trouble performing your FW update, but it is nice to know that Emotiva is willing and able to perform the task for you. Their Customer Service and Tech Support are the best I have found during my 47 years in this hobby.

Hi Guys
I’m new on the block but just completed my 4th re-install, the current one was with the alternative method mentioned here. While learning the ins and outs as a new user I ran into a few issues so attempted the FW re-install of 7.4.19, oddly the first went without a glitch, the second ran into runtime problems but was able to complete it although the verification would not complete on the DSP, just ignored it and proceeded to step two and things were fine for a day or two. Did the third re-install this morning; same verify problem but continued on with FW. The UMC-1 did not go into stand-by with the amber light after completion so turned it off from the back, but when I turned it back on the amber light did go on, but pushing the front button sent the UMC-1 into a repeat loading cycle, turned it back off from the back and it then appeared to start-up normally. Anyway figured all was not right and did not even bother to try anything, instead decided to do the alternative method, bingo everything went like clock-work and the update process went as described. For the update I used a current Think Pad, Win7 Pro, 4G of ram and rebooted prior to each procedure now to see if I’m glitch free, hopefully!

Robert Just a follow up, the UMC-1 is now definitely a keeper, not one one issue since the last install and everything works as expected and sounds great. But I guess my advice is, for anyone picking up a second hand UMC-1 is to purge the unit and get a clean install of 7.4.19 and your UMC-1 should function as originally intended. Robert

I'm trying to do this after about 7 Overtime! errors, even errors in step 1. Is it correct the bar doesn't reach 100% (full blue) before it switches to step 2? Here it goes to step 2 first time at about 70%, several tries later it seems to vary. I followed the instructions on page 1, hardquit the installer (red windows X) immediately when step 1 switches to step 2 (usually right after that I get the overtime error, so I quit before this happens). The Emotiva is now in a loading loop.
Now I'm trying to repeat these steps but turning the machine off on the front instead of the back, like stated a few posts before by Wizardofoz, but I can't even seem to finish step 1....
This thing should be sold as a slotmachine...

Ok just got it, step 1 keeps crashing, when it does it goes directly to step 2, stays at xx% and fails, so I never actually completed step 1 in the first place. After several tries I switched the (normal decent) USB cable for another one, even shorter and with ferrite bead, and now it completes. Or actually it still crashed at step 3, but after a reset the UMC wrote and verified on it's own. New firmware didn't fix my issues though, but that's another topic... After powering on and off a few times I just get "loading..." on the front panel. Any ideas?

After powering on and off a few times I just get "loading..." on the front panel. Any ideas? Try turning it off with the front button then also with the switch on the back for 10 or 20 seconds. Then switch the rear back on and then try the front button.

Thanks for the response. Didn't do anything. Still in some loop.
I noticed that the Installer software goes through the Step 1 and turns the UMC off and on but the status bar never says 100%.
What should the front panel say?
