I had already heard about Emotiva on some of other forums and they all loved the Magnepan 1.7 + Emotiva XPA-2 combination. After I decided to build a great HT/Stereo system for my living room instead of more AVR crap, I found myself listening to Magnepan 1.7s at Definitive Audio. They were SO ridiculously good at precise imaging and "wider than the speakers (30 degrees)" soundstage (90+ degrees) that I had to have a pair. I could have sworn there were front wide speakers in that dealer listening room when I was sitting in the sweet spot. I had always liked planar speakers like Martin Logan electrostatics, and Maggies are very similar(electomagentic planar). From there I wanted some great solid-state amps and a lot of people recommended Emotiva monoblocks (UPA-1, XPA-1) or the XPA-2. Once you hear that combo, you're off to the races... I would think an Emotiva + Magnepan joint marketing program would be an awesome combo. Even if you just start with the entry level products like UPA-200 and MMGW on both sides. Two great American companies producing outstanding audiophile gear.

What brought me to Emotiva? Probably Emotiva's rapidly growing reputation for providing the 'biggest bang for the buck' in audio/video gear around! I was (and still am) in the market for an excellent multi-channel amplifier, and was strongly considering the combo of XPA-2 & XPA-5 (or XPA-3). Then they then released the VERY tempting XPR-5! My original thought was to drive them with my Yammy's pre-outs, but now I'm leaning more toward using a dedicated surround processor - see how addicting and 'heroin-like' this hobby can be? I started by pretty much reading every amplifier thread on this forum dealing with the XPA series amps and learned a ton in the process. Then ventured over to the HT section and looked at all the postings members have put up in the various 'show me your Emo gear' threads - some very inspiring set-ups people! I'm still trolling around learning more and more, and plan to pull the trigger this fall or winter on some Emo amp(s). Even Mrs. Mad Norseman's on board for this, and she's in fact designing the cabinetry that will hold and ventilate it all! Fun stuff, and I'm glad I'm here!

Do not use glass shelves. You want to be able to support the amplifier/s. Plan on at least two. I had to search for mine. I was able to get the last one at BB. They don't carry it anymore.

Oh yeah, we both have experience with design, and furniture design, (Mr. & Mrs. Mad Norseman are both licensed architects, and she has a lot of furniture design experiance), and we have all the stats for all the amplifier possibilities. Ventilation is a big consideration as well. Mrs. Mad Norseman, (what a champ she is! ) designed the large center section that now holds our 65" Panny and hundreds of Blu-rays & CDs for our living room, (that was the price of turning our living room into a quasi-home theater...). So now I'm looking forward to getting the two matching end sections built, (or at least get them under contract), one of which will hold the amp(s) & most other components so I can go ahead and start ordering amplifiers! Yeah!

My car... literally; February 2010. I just LOVE "Airplane, the movie" style humor! ;D I pulled that same bit when visiting an Office Depot store in Madison, WI last June. Walked in and the 'greeter' chirpily asks: "What brings you to Office Depot today?"And I of course answer: "My car!" (I got "the look"... ).

I managed to land myself a good job out of college a few years back, and as a congratulatory gift to myself I decided to spend my first bonus on a new HT system. (Priorities, am I right?)
In college I always used Polk speakers due to their bang for your buck when a few hundred dollars is all your budget allows. So once I had money set aside and was ready for a larger purchase, Polk Audio was where I began my search.
Immediately I was drawn to either the LSi15s or the LSi9s, depending on what I could fit in my apartment. After researching these speakers it became evident quickly that a receiver wasn't going to cut it. At least, not really. So I started to look into amps.
The first amplifier I considered was the Outlaw Model 2200. The unit had (and still has) a great following, but I always shop around for my options when it comes to large purchases.
My search eventually led me to Emotiva. At the start, both Outlaw and Emotiva looked similar. Both companies had (and have) great followings with great service expectations, and both companies had amplifiers in my price range which were very well received.
Emotiva, however, seemed to speak to me more than Outlaw did. For one, aesthetically, I am a huge fan of black anodized aluminium and blue lighting. Secondly, I liked the attention to detail Emotiva seemed to put into their amplifier interiors. It seemed to me like Emotiva wanted their amplifiers to look just as good with their covers off as they do with them on, and these details spoke to me.
It may seem silly to judge an amplifier on the color of its PCBs (and it is), but as a newcomer to this world with two seemingly similar options to try out (both companies offered trial periods) the details matter and played a part in which product I trialed first.
(I also found the lounge, which seemed to be a somewhat "lighter" place to hang out in than the Outlaw forums, in my opinion.)
Then, when the XPA-5 was all hooked up, I liked it so much that I never bothered with the Model 2200 trial period (although I did gain experience with this amplifier later on).
Afterwards, I ended up buying a UMC-1 (which I am very happy with, although I use the main output on my Oppo for DVD scaling and 3D), and the rest of the Emotiva gear in my signature.
I will likely move the UMC-1 to a new bedroom system and replace it with one of the gen 2 processors this or early next year as well.

I forget what site I was on, but I asked someone who had good separates. I then signed up on this site.
Once I bought one of the EMO Amps and the UMC-1 I never looked back.
The sound quality just walked all over my old Sony AVR.
Just damn good products at damn good pricing !

Had wanted separates for a long time but couldn't justify prices for the name brand separates. Was on the Axiom Audio website and saw Emotiva mentioned in a couple of posts. Came to their website, saw the deal of the day on the LMC & LPA combo and bought them. Have been hooked ever since!!!
I've bought a lot of Emo product over the years and have sold quite a bit also. Still have a bunch and still love em!!! ;D

A couple years ago I was looking for a 12" sub to go with my GR AV1s and Outlaw RR2150, but couldn't afford an SVS nor did I have the time or tools to DIY a sub. Somehow I stumbled across the Ultra 12 and bought it on sale. Less than a year later I bought another on sale because I thought the first was working too hard by itself. Then decided I wanted a "real amp" for my future project speakers (Exodus 2641 drivers), and bought an XPA-2 on sale. Didn't really 'need' it, but definitely felt like it made a difference. Every time I add a new piece I feel like listening to all my music over again, neighbors be damned.

The NAD T163 A/V Pre/Pro that I bought in '04 bit the dust so the search was on for a new one. Despite alot of negativity in articles that I read the UMC-1 is attractive looking had all the features I was looking for and priced within my budget. I am hoping it will make my Klipsch Heritage sing.
The system is capable of theater level reproduction with incredible dynamics so I am thinking the UMC-1 will bring it to another level of clarity over and above the NAD T163 its replacing.
Cheers! ;D

I keep telling my 15 year old son that I am going to build him a killer system but then I remember that would mean it would take away from building my system ;D Welcome to the lounge.

My suggestion is that your dad needs to sit down and talk to you about the facts of life - that we are all here to help Emotiva continue to produce equipment. ;D If you are unsure about anything I suggest your dad pass along his current setup to you (since he is already familiar with it and can use it as an excellent teaching example) and that he just get new gear for himself. That seems like the least he could do.

Well, everything that I currently have in my living area (Amplifier, 5.1 speakers and my 55" tv) I wouldn't have, had it not been for him. However, I am first in line (I hope) for his umc-1 when the xmc-1 comes out. And as far as building your son a system... You can give a man an Emotiva syetem, but if you taught him to build one for himself....
