Well. I am a UFL member with one XMC-1 purchased directly from Emotiva, but I haven't got the e-mail. I have to add that when I purchased the first XMC-1, they had to do a verification of my UFL membership (which I first received upon purchasing the PT 7030) before authorizing the purchase, and I thought that verification took a little bit longer than it normally should. It makes me wonder whether they do have all UFL members grouped in one same readily accessible file, or whether they have their names split up and grouped in separate locations.

LOL when you say they do not always participate that would imply that at some point they have offered a discount. The price has always been $4k and dont tell me they don't have room to budge. You can buy direct off their website so all the margin between what they sell to retailers and the retail price is pure profit. How can it be cheaper for us to fly 16hrs to america and pick it up in person than to buy locally? The sale price is 2642.93 Australian Dollars, the local price is $4000. Surely you could put some pressure on them to adjust their price. Sorry to call you out, but did you hear about duties, freight and overheads? There is no "pure profit" in the business world. Besides that, the final asking price will be determined by the market. If they don't sell units at $4K, they will have to trim margins and if the profit is not worth it they will stop selling the products and emotiva will have to evaluate going back to direct for international, time will tell. Filling in a few gaps, ie; we are not complaining without knowing the facts. No duty between USA and Australia as we have a free trade agreement. Yes there is an exchange rate (USD vs AUD) and we have allowed for it. An XPA-1L weighs a bit more than a XMC-1 and one of them cost me $US160 to freight, so hardly a big deal. The comparison is what a USA local can buy including freight, tax and Emotiva's margin. Compared to the exact same item for an Australia local. Since Emotiva sell direct and retail sales price in the USA is the same then retail margins must be already built in (to Emotiva's normal price). For sure Emotiva offers discounts (25% UFL, 40% card etc), promotions and sales, but for comparison purposes we have ignored them. The question remains, why should an Australia retailer make a hugely higher $margin than a USA retailer? As for "determined by the market", since the market knows the direct price from Emotiva (it's right there on the web site) then the market has a pretty good idea of what the market price should be. Yes, we know it's not going to be the same (exchange rate notwithstanding), but almost twice as much is quite a bit more than what most people would consider reasonable. From my perspective, the bottom line is it's Emotiva's decision and only they know wether it was a good business move for them or not. All I am doing is pointing out the facts, so that when they are looking at the results they can get some understanding as to why it's working or not working for them. Personally I think that they would do much better from having a local service/warranty agent and selling the product direct. This is what the Wiz did in Singapore, plus offered Group Buys to move some volume. Similarly I did a bit of service and installation work in Oz at no real cost to Emotiva. Indirectly associated, Aussies are well and truly sick and tired of paying more, a lot more, for almost everything. Hence why direct buying is so popular here and why the offerings are expanding almost daily. Emotiva's change in business direction is directly the opposite of that, hence it stands out as being not in tune with the market, a move many see as back to the bad old days. I'm not really complaining, just pointing out the facts, it ultimately makes no difference to me personally, I'm overdue for another trip to the US and picking up an XMC-1 at a price that pays a goodly proportion of the cost of the trip is not a bad deal. Cheers Gary Having free trade doesn't mean zero duties Freight doesn't mean one box shipped, means around 20 lines or more of charges for the importer, logistics etc. Australian retailers can set the price that they want, if nobody buys the products they will have to adjust their pricing. Maybe some Australian audio companies should take advantage of the situation I was in south america last week and all the electronics are around 75% more. I saw a lot of travelers carrying Tv's, laptops, etc.

To me that is almost pure profit. I like having a local distributor who can do upgrades, we would just like them to be more competitive on price. It shouldn't be cheaper to holiday to america and buy one there then pick one up down the road.

They can only get as low as 5% with the agreement that they are the only ones and it has to be a MAP in place hence the higher price. Regarding the import duties is more complicated than that. A free trade partner still has to pay duties depending on the type of goods and if it is for resale purposes, etc. Shipping by sea can be quite expensive at the end. Is a fraction than Air but is not as cheap as people think with all the logistics involved Final Link being the distributor is in charge of storing all the goods, pay for shipping (they can do dropshipping as well) while the retailers can have very low stock or sometimes only demo items. When an order comes, the distributor is in charge of the dropship. Of course is all speculation and only Emotiva and its partners now the real numbers and process. $4000AUD is $3000 US dollars. 10% for the tax built in the price, 20% for the profit, shipping is included that put the price on $2000-2100. With the XMC-1 at MSRP of $2500 in US is not bad at all IMO

Having free trade doesn't mean zero duties I can't speak for other countries but when Australia does a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) it's a two way duty free arrangement. For example there is no import duty charged for product manufactured in the USA into Australia and no import duty charged for product manufactured in Australia into the USA. So the XMC-1, as it is made in the USA has no duty charged but XPA Gen 1 and 2 power amps were manufactured in China and, even thought there were shipped from the USA, the FTA didn't apply and we paid 5% import duty (if the value of the item was over $A1K). The maths for me is pretty simple, $US1,699 at 0.77 = $A2,206 that's right now today. It's a fair comparison as the only stock currently in Australia is old (no 4K) spec. Plus I'm confident that the $A3,999 is not going to be the price here for the new spec. So at $A3,999 it means a saving of $A1,793 and I can get a flight next Thursday for $A999, that leaves me $A794 to spend. Advance tickets, off peak times are commonly $A850, so that means two tickets and an XMC-1 for less than what the XMC-1 will cost me here. I may or may not have to pay the 10% GST when I get home, but even at $A220 (the maximum) it still means a $A1,573 saving. It's actually better than that as I still have ~$US2K on my credit card left over from the last trip which I bought at 0.98 and I can use my 25% UFL discount. We can go around in circles and play with the numbers countless ways, but for me it's pretty obvious that I'd be stupid to pay the $A3,999 locally. I hardly think that I'm only one doing this sort of calculation. Cheers Gary

I hardly think that I'm only one doing this sort of calculation. To me is silly criticize a business model based on sale pricing and having to flight 15 hours one way to buy a product. Of course you can take advantage having a vacation or a business trip but i don't think that emotiva makes a decision based on those factors.

Understood, but what is irking me a bit is that there might be some kind of pecking order (or to put it in less flattering terms, a system of inequality and discrimination) at work even among the UFL membership or upgrade system. Yes, I am familiar with the "business model" argument, namely that, Emo can adopt whatever business model they see fit in order to advance their own standing. However, this system of discrimination within the same group or category of buyers does not quite sit well with me... Just saying.
