I'm in the camp that found 4K a minor upgrade over 1080p in my room (dark and about 8'~9' viewing distance) but HDR makes a big difference. Sooo... Any word on the Atmos board? I don't really care since I only have 7.1 and no plans to add, but hey it is what the thread is about so obligatory content. I suspect they're buried under RMC-1 issues (still awaiting the next XMC-1 update).

I do indeed have a calibration scheduled for the TV in a couple of weeks. I did think that the colors on the Ghost in the Shell 4k looked vibrant and cool. My wife even commented that that movie looked good when we watched it. But I've found that HDR content looks a tad darker than SDR overall. Someone previously linked to a great article that noted how HDR content needs to have a certain amount of headroom to get the large range of light to dark. That explained why HDR can look dark in general on some TV's. One thing I didn't like was on Blade Runner 2049. In the scene near the end where K is on the bridge at night and he sees the giant advertisement for Joi, the pink and blue colors reflected on his face are VERY bright and saturated on the 4k as opposed to the regular Blu-ray. It just looks weird. The colors are almost fluorescent. Maybe the calibration will fix this. Also check out this article here about the Panny 820, and pretty good explanation of what it does for tone mapping to your TV. www.soundandvision.com/content/panasonic-dp-ub820-ultra-hd-blu-ray-player-review

It really depends on the type of your display ; why the 820 and 420 have multiple brightness options for oled/lcd/projector etc . The 9000 goes 1 step further ; it shares the metadata of the disc with the latest jvc projectors and auto cals to the projectors lumens [joint venture between the 2 companies..] . They say it looks like a giant oled ; some nice dynamic range [at least for a projector ] As I suspected it didn't take long for the rmc1's beta to become an official version ; only a few things extra were listed forging ahead

Im the opposite. Love 4k and can easily see the difference, when 4k is done well You sir are a Videophile. 😊 I can see it too just saying it isn't that spectacular over 1080p bluray. I actually watch movies for the audio experience, my wife is the opposite. It’s hard for me to do a back to back comparison because the 4K TV (mid range) is much bigger than the 2K TV (top of the range). What I can't do is watch 1K on the bigger 4K screen, it’s just a horrible viewing experience, but 720/1080 is pretty damn good. What really stands out is anything in HDR, then the larger 4K TV is noticeably better. Especially anything reflective, light off water, metallic with sheen or just simply sparkly, that’s were 4K HDR shows it’s superiority. FWIW my wife is a storyophile, video or audio doesn’t impress her as much as a good story well told. Cheers Gary

Well thanks a lot guys. You just cost me another $500. I went and bought an 820. Funny that you mention sparkly things looking good in HDR Gary. I remember thinking that the rain splashing off the surface of the water at the end of Blade Runner 2049, (when K is fighting Love) looked cool.

I have an LG OLED C7 (2017 model) TV and Oppo UDP-203 player. For completeness, the rest of the system is the XMC-1, an XPA-2 for L/R, and XPA-5 for center, surrounds, and rears. I use a SONOS:Connect via optical for streaming sources and an older (not X1) Comcast STB. Speakers are all Revel, Voice2 center, Salon2's for the rest. Room is 13'3" W x "17'7" L x 8'6" H and is pretty heavily treated with absorbers. It is also isolated from the rest of the house using Kinetics IsoMax clips to float walls and ceiling (basement, concrete floor), a fully sealed heavy solid-core exterior door, and mini-split for HVAC (no ducts to the rest of the house). All I really need is more time to listen to it all...

I have the 420, really works well with my projector. Looking to upgrade from my 900 with one .Its worth noting the 420 is only for us lucky people in the EU or Aus . It loses the fancy multi analogue stage but retains the 820's same extreme processor :)It only loses the dolby vision upgrade which doesn't matter for projectors thankfully..

Yes, that´s exactly why I saw no reason to get the 820 in my use case.

My XMC-1 with V3 4K video board works perfectly. So no need to delay the Atmos/DTS board. Cheers Gary Mine worked fine when it was shipped back then i saw the new firmware that was released on dec 8 that said you should install. So i did and now i have issues like when i turn on it wont display video until i switch inputs and then back. Also the center channel would not play in a surround format 7.1 but if i play as all stereo it will. So i tried to go back to the aug release firmware and it failed to install. not sure if it defaulted back to old firmware if it is still on the dec 8 but all of a sudden everything works again. Is very weird to me. I had also tried to install the dec 8 a couple of times as the video display issue was irritating. So now im back to working and im not going to mess with again until the atmos upgrade.

You obviously don't have a clue ! And yes I'm a little flustered and have the right to express myself ! Don't want to pick Bones just want to know if or when there is going to be a fix. All my gear works as advertised with one exception "XMC-1" ! Geez dude. We get it, you're upset. I've had issues with my XMC as well. So far the only fix for me has been to put my XMC on lowest power and go through the full one minute boot cycle every time. Not ideal but at least the system works for now. The only lingering issue for me is the loss of center channel audio whenever I first play a 4k blu-ray disc. An input switch solves this. From what I've read Bootman has been nothing but cordial and genuinely seems willing to help you out. How about you try NOT shitting all over the guy? I have the center channel audio issue and the no video but have audio also. the no video can be fixed with switching input and back. The audio works in all stereo mode but not 7.1 mode. this all happened when i upgraded to dec 8 firmware. I was able to resolve by going back to the aug release firmware as this gave me no issues at all. I only upgraded firmware as it was recommended by emotiva to do so. So i will not touch firmware ever again until atmos upgrade or there are issues to merit the need.

So apparently the issue is between the Sony player and the XMC. Weird.

Hopefully that Panny fixes things for you. Please report your results back as we'd all like to know. I installed the 820 today and fired up Ghost in the Shell. After trying the preset "Standard, Natural, Light room and Bright room" Optimizer settings I found that none of them quite worked out for me. Sure they brighten up the picture overall but they brightened up the blacks a little too much for my taste. Blacks became dark grays. So I went into the manual adjustments of the Optimizer and found that lightening the blacks up to +3 was the sweet spot for me. It made the picture not so dark without washing out the nice, inky blacks. Just for shits and giggles I put in the BD version and found that now the regular BD looked dark and the 4k version was brighter. So even though my Q8 TV was Samsung's top of the line model last year and is capable of outputting about 2,000 nits, (according to the Rtings review), the 820 certainly seems to have done the trick for me. Thanks for the suggestion guys. Even got the 820 for $399 as an open box from Best Buy.

Hi All, Any update on the Atmos board? ....My new house will be completed in one month. Back when we started planning, I thought there would be NO WAY my XMC-1 would not be ready for the Atmos duties it was destined to receive! I'm now coming to a cross road, look at other brands like Anthem, or hold on a bit longer? Really disappointing the system may not be fully functional when re-installed into new home/system.
The two things keeping me hanging on to the XMC-1 now are: 1. Dirac (I'm not sure how ARC compares to Dirac?) 2. Clever 12V trigger switching (it can detect multi-channel and switch on/off my surround amplification - nice!)
This is what it has now come to... I really hope something happens REAL soon
cheers

After that itll be on the website for reference.

Thanks cjcody , appreciate the info. I don't want to grizzle for the sake of grizzling.... but I cant help but feel it would have been more considerate if Emotiva would update their loyal XMC-1 owners as soon as they had info, rather than waiting to announce it publicly. I just put mine up for sale two days ago.... So we'll see what happens I guess, in the hands of fate ;-) cheers

I believe the only reason i was emailed is because i have had an email string dating back to when the atmos board was launched. I was one of the 1st few people who sent in their xmc1 and they then said they had issues with the firmware and ended up keeping my unit for 2 months. Needless to say i was not a happy camper and that was when Dan sent me a nice email and then we talked on the phone which to my surprise was initiated by him. In the end i was assured i would be happy with the results and as an attempt to smooth things he gave us all the little ego. I personally would rather have had the big ego for the digital output but ohh well it now sits in the box it came as i have no use for it. So im excited for atmos but 10 more weeks just to announce it at Axpona is going to seem for ever. I also think a discount for a group buy should be made available.

I'm confused. So it'll be announced at Axpona? The fact that it exists in some state will be announced? The actual release date and availability will be announced? This is in my opinion just another kick the can down the road. I mean we could wait 10 more weeks to find out it's due sometime 2nd quarter or by the end of the year (2019) maybe?
