Emotiva,
One thing that might be extremely beneficial for some us with new UMCs is an acknowledgment of some the firmware defects that have been reported. I, for one, cannot keep a unit that does not have a working cross over or non-working EQ trim levels (http://emotivalounge.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=preamps&action=display&thread=9646) or a unit that cannot reacquire an audio signal after pausing\fast forwarding on the DVR (some other threads, cannot find it). I have voiced my issues with Lonnie directly as Im sure others have as well. However, Big Dan's latest update insinuates that you guys may believe several issues are in fact user error and not SW bugs.
That is slightly frustrating to me and I'm sure others as well. I think what would help substantially is a locked thread where Lonnie or the rest of the tech staff can list what they understand to be a SW issue that will be corrected as soon as possible. Obviously, it may take some time to sort out what is causing all of the issues, but a simple statement that there are equalization issues, for example, would put a lot of minds at ease while a fix is being worked on.

I'm very confident Emotiva will resolve real /known issues, when they are real and known. It takes just a little time to determine whats real and user error or compatabilty issues.Several issues are real and I'm sure once reported/ duplicated/corrected they will inform us and put together an update.

Are you saying these issues are not real or user error? Twice in your quoted post you reference real/known. C'mon man . When does it become obvious to you that there are some serious issues with the UMC-1 but some members here seem to keep wanting to believe it is either user error or not real . There have been multiple posts by UMC-1 owners with the same issues. Do you think they are making this stuff up? Bill

. . . Do you think they are making this stuff up? Bill I'd like to believe that you are ;D But somehow I know better. At first I was pretty disappointed that I was going to have to wait so long for a UMC-1 (I'm very late on the second pre-order list). Now I'm glad - hopefully it will give them a chance to resolve some of this stuff.

As akbungle mentioned (above) Emotiva's latest webcast acknowledges that there are several FW issues that they are currently working on. They clearly stated that all the flaws will be addressed as quickly as is possible and that they would not leave anyone standing in the lurches. With this promise to do whatever it takes to fix all the problems as quickly as possible, why so much concern by a few? Emotiva's track record for fixing any and all issues is admirable. No company releases perfect products... not even Emotiva. Very few of those companies keep you as well informed about what they are doing to address flaws found in their products as Emotiva does. There is no reason to think Emotiva will not fix any flaw you find AND report to them. What I heard in the latest Webcast is that some of the problems are only being posted in the Lounge and that some of the problems being reported directly to Emotiva lack enough detail for them to understand what is happening. Emotiva was asking that when you do have a problem to report it directly to them with enough details to allow them to fix the issue. That seems to be a very reasonable request to me. Work with them and you will get your problems resolved as quickly as is possible -- past performance proves this to be true.

As some have mentioned they have contacted Emotiva and explained in detail what issues they are having with their UMC-1s. Whether it is reported to Emotiva verbally, through e-mail or posted here in the Lounge I do not think it would be hard for Emotiva to test units for these issues. I do not doubt Emotiva will correct these issues but the list of issues seems to be growing.
Why would be people be concerned? I guess people are expecting a prepro that functions properly when they put it in their system. A prepro that they do not have to do numerous SW updates that have proven to be very difficult to do for some. I'm not the most gifted computer person and I do not want to have to be constantly updating the UMC-1 I will be getting so basic setup features work correctly.

"There have been multiple posts by UMC-1 owners with the same issues. Do you think they are making this stuff up?"
I have seen repeated threads started over the many months I have been here about Emo owner's who have amps that go into protection or just have no sound in one or all channels. In almost all cases the cause turns out to be user error or defective cables hooked up to the amp.
This doesn't mean that there are not problems with the UMC-1, I in fact believe there are. However, I'll bet my next social security check that a reasonably significant number of them are either user error or problems in connected products. I don't think it is unreasonable to mention this.

The "acknowledged" problems from the webcast are: the cumbersome firmware update, sub levels being set a little hot, weak remote. That's it. There is some comment about issues being looked into and being fixed in good time, but no specifics. No mention of the trim levels not being used at start-up, no mention of phantom speakers appearing in emo-q setting, no mention of the non-repeatablity of emo-q, no mention of sub EQ not actually changing anything, no mention of audio lock being lost when using DVR, no mention of audio issues in stereo mode over digital connection. Lots of these problems have multiple people experiencing them.
Now, not all of these may turn out to be "real" problems, but likely some of them will. Most of them are being experienced by multiple users, not just one guy whose amp is going into protection. Many have spent a long time troubleshooting and we are now getting closer and closer to the end of the 30 days following the FW release, understandable that some are getting antsy.

Unreal, pass the Kool Aid will ya ;D. Bill

Please don't forget that none of the three video modes (locked, pass-through or auto) appears to work the way we need it to. I'm hoping that Dan's next update he talks about will address these issues. Personally, I'm not so worried about emo-Q issues as I will likely do many manual adjustments, but these are a problem: 1. Unit shut down upon incoming dropout 2. General problems playing with Directv HRxx DVRs 3. The video issues mentioned above (true pass-through with OSD is good enough for me). 4. Working sub Eq (well, all EQ). 5. Speaker trim levels lost at shut-down (my unit is off 95% of the time).. The non-existent speaker thing sounds like a simple software code error.

That was my impression also when I listened to the audio update. I heard a lot of laughing and joking and I had the feeling that they didn't buy a lot of the problems that people are having. I truly believe that they are concerned and trying to fix things, but the audio itself did not give me much confidence. With the LMC, Emotiva used a very public beta testing which led to a lot of public discussion about problems most of which were eventually solved. This time they used a private beta testing process which obviously led to a high expectation of a bug free introduction. I guess they can't win. In any event, I believe Emotiva will get most issues solved, it's just that the audio update wasn't a confidence builder. Ray

It would be a very strong message as many were expecting small glitches but these are big issues that just seem to be adding up . I wonder if those that do wait and if the issues are not resolved with a FW update whether Emotiva would allow returns after the 30 day period is over. Bill

Ray I think the tough part for some is that the issues customers are having are new to them, yet all things in their system have remaind constant besides the UMC-1, they didn't drag out random stuff to include specifically with the UMC-1. That's why the "user error" comments are tough for some to swallow. Many were utilizing another processor of some sort before going to the UMC-1, and the problem didn't start until the UMC-1 was included in their system. In the webcast they are acting like there are 30 year old products people are trying to use with their UMC-1. Most issues seem to surround the HDMI inputs, which means the products can't be THAT old. As for the cable/satellite box audio drop-out issues, I didn't have this issue via HDMI on my Pioneer Elite 79avi, Yamaha 661, or my Onkyo 885....were all these products doing it wrong just like the cable box?? And I think many others are in the same positions as far as their various problems go.

Ray Ray, I would have to say that whatever Emotiva paid for the private Beta testing they certainly did not get their moneys worth unfortunately . I would expect that they would get all the issues resolved. I'm very surprised Emotiva is still shipping units with this new batch of issues surfacing. I did not see the podcast but if the crew from Emotiva were laughing and joking I would not be too happy if the UMC-1 I owned had the issues being mentioned here on the Lounge. Bill

The entire reason that I am on the pre-order list is that my BK Reference 30 had Audio-drop-out issues with my Directv HD DVR. UNACCEPTABLE. I sold that unit and am awaiting a working pre/pro - hopefully, the UMC-1.
I am very concerned if the UMC-1 cannot positively lock onto the audio signal from DirecTV on an HD DVR. Let me put it more simply.... My plan is to order the UMC-1 and give it a try. Here is my definition of try:
I will put it in my system and see if it works correctly. If it works correctly - I'm happy. If it doesn't work correctly, I will IMMEDIATELY call Emotiva and get an RMA number. I have no plans to do firmware updates in my home. I am not going to give anyone the benefit of the doubt that these issues will be fixed in short order. I will simply return the unit and buy something else.
I just don't care to be beta-tester unless Emotiva puts me on their payroll.
I don't think I'm being unreasonable. I want a quality product delivered the first time without any defects. There are no 2nd chances with me.

This can be a good thing especially if improvements of fixes can be made. If you are unwilling to deal with firmware updates on electronic products, that's a real problem Having said that, I do agree that electronic products including the UMC-1 should be "plug and play" and work out of the box. It doesn't matter what it costs, it should work. Based on your response, I don't think you should be looking to buy the UMC-1. You will more than likely be returning it.
